1. 6 Films for Rebels and Patriots Players! - 2019-03-05 10:57:00
Rebels and Patriots, written by Michael Leck and Daniel Mersey, has captured many of your imaginations and seen you take to the tabletop to refight the battles that helped to forge the United States of America. There are countless tales of great battles that we've read about in history books, seen on television shows and documentaries, and, of course, watched on the big screen!
We’ve taken a look at some of the films that could inspire you in your games of Rebels and Patriots, turning to our resident film-buff Phil Smith for his expert advice!
Major Dundee (1965)

Directed by Sam Peckinpah, Major Dundee follows the story of a Union cavalry officer (played by Charlton Heston) leading a troop of Army regulars, Confederate prisoners, and Indian scouts on an expedition into Mexico to destroy a band of Apaches during the American Civil War.
Phil’s Take: Just looking at the cast you are already onto a winner. Charlton Heston, Richard Harris, James Coburn. What’s not to love? The film’s got Union cavalry, with artillery support, some Confederate POWs, and civilian volunteers going to Mexico in pursuit of Apache rebels and encountering French forces. It’s already a Rebels and Patriots game – just field the units you fancy painting!

The Alamo (2004)

A massive box office bomb, The Alamo depicts the infamous Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution.
Phil’s Take: I know it has its flaws and takes some hefty liberties, but it’s enjoyable and looks great. Bonus points for the ending with the Battle of San Jacinto. An extra fun fact for you – before donating it all to Texas, Phil Collins owned one of the largest collections of Alamo artefacts and memorabilia.

The Patriot (2000)

Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Mel Gibson, Chris Cooper, Heath Ledger, and Jason Isaacs, the film follows the story of an American Colonist who is swept into the American Revolutionary War when his family is threatened.
Phil’s Take: Nonsense, but the battles are well shot, and it has a great villain in Jason Isaacs’ Colonel Tavington.

Last of the Mohicans (1992)

Based on James Fenimore Cooper’s 1826 novel The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 and the subsequent film adaptation, The Last of the Mohicans brings the French and Indian War to the silver screen, starring Daniel Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, and Wes Studi.
Phil’s Take: Endlessly and effortlessly entertaining. Plus, one of the best soundtracks of all time.

The Buccaneer (1958)

Starring Yul Brynner and Charles Boyer, with Charlton Heston playing a supporting role, The Buccaneer tells a heavily-fictionalized version of how the privateer Lafitte helped in the Battle of New Orleans.
Phil’s take: Somehow, I’d never seen it – never even heard of it until Chris Cook (our Games Assistant) suggested it for this list. I have now watched the climactic Battle of New Orleans and want to watch the rest of it.

Gettysburg (1993)

An epic war film with an impressive cast, Gettysburg tells the story of one of the most famous battles in history, with Union and Confederate forces clashing in a battle that is seen by many as the turning point of the American Civil War.
Phil’s take: It’s beyond the scope of Rebels and Patriots, but I defy you to not want to wargame the ACW after watching it!
Order your copy of Rebels and Patriots today and bring these battles to your tabletop!

1. A “Wild Bill” for a Wild Theater: The Aleutians 1942-43 - 2019-03-06 11:51:49
In today’s post, Brian Lane Herder, author of new campaign title The Aleutians 1942–43, reveals the story of the incredible and incorrigible USAAF Colonel William O.“Eric” Eareckson, the highly decorated and larger-than-life bomber commander of the Eleventh Air Force during their World War II posting in the Aleutian Islands.
There’s a great scene at the beginning of the 1962 movie Lawrence of Arabia (well, they’re all great scenes) where the geeky Lawrence, a total misfit at headquarters, is excited to get out into the field – the brutally hostile Arabian desert. “It’s going to be fun,” he says. The cunning politician, Dryden, politely admonishes Lawrence: “Lawrence, there’s only two kinds of creature who get fun in the desert: Bedouins and gods, and you’re neither. Take it from me, for ordinary men, it’s a burning, fiery furnace.” Lawrence replies, “No, Dryden .... it’s going to be fun.” For Western officers, the brutal and alien Arabian desert provided an extraordinary sort of psychological litmus test, where the occasional weird character like Lawrence suddenly excelled, and the parade ground martinet often went to watch his career die – if not also himself and the men under his command.
This was also Alaska. "The Last Frontier” is almost entirely wilderness and the land still beggars one’s supply of superlatives. In terms of sheer physical size Alaska equals Western Europe. Its terrain consists of steep fjords, active volcanoes, glaciers, tundra, taiga, icefields, and North America’s highest mountain ranges. Alaska’s highest mountain, Denali, is the tallest mountain in the world from base to summit (a vertical rise of over 18,000ft, half again that of Everest). Denali is also the world’s largest mountain in terms of sheer mass. Alaska’s far northerly setting provides months of either darkness or light (the “midnight sun”) depending on season and one’s location. Additionally, the coastal Alaskan climate is overwhelmingly overcast. In the Aleutian Islands, the climate is even worse – typically foggy, misty, and snowy. Additionally, the islands are endowed with williwaws, a unique winter storm that can reach wind speeds of 130mph. In the Aleutians the weather is rarely warm, yet rarely is it ever cold enough to truly freeze the heat-sapping humidity out of the air. The high winds prevent the growth of trees or brush. When combined with several feet of sodden volcanic muck, the end result is a cold, wet slime that covers everything – all beneath a chilly, relentlessly gray sky. For Americans transferred to the Aleutians, the depressing climate sometimes caused severe psychological issues – suicide rates among US personnel serving in Alaska were the highest of any wartime theater.

More than the average campaign, the physically hostile Aleutian theater provided an assemblage of characters. Perhaps no officer stands out more than USAAF Colonel William O. “Eric” Eareckson. Eareckson, the Eleventh Air Force’s bomber commander, who looked every part the dashing pilot. Nicknamed “Wild Bill,” the chain-smoking Eareckson had prematurely gray hair and a Clark Gable style pencil mustache. Using his own name, Eareckson enjoyed trash-talking the Japanese over the radio while he was bombing them, and frequently found himself on air sparring live with Tokyo Rose. The Japanese of course reported Eareckson killed many times, often announced by Tokyo Rose: “Our dear friend Eareckson was shot down today ….”
Eareckson was 42 years old when the Aleutians campaign began. He had fought in World War I France as an infantryman. After the war Eareckson received an appointment to West Point, where he became a prominent glee club member. Eareckson actually washed out of pilot training at 24 years old, then became a stand-out Army balloonist before successfully earning his pilot wings at age 30. Despite his cavalier image, the immensely popular Eareckson cared deeply about the men under his command, even singing to them while on bombing missions to keep them calm. An innovative tactical commander, Eareckson was always willing to try something new. On August 17, 1942, he used his radar-equipped B-17s to set up a successful ambush of Japanese H6K Mavis bombers by P-38 fighters – possibly the world’s first air-to-air radar interception.

Изображение

Eareckson was deeply irreverent to “the system.” While filling out a post-mission action report, in the section marked “Date,” Eareckson once wrote, “Thursday, I think.” When appointed command of XI Bomber Command, a position which should have warranted brigadier-general rank, no promotion was forthcoming. “Eareckson can’t even spell discipline,” stated Eleventh Air Force commander Major-General William Butler. Fortunately for Eareckson, Alaska’s overall US Army commander was Major-General Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. Like Eareckson, Buckner was eccentric, larger than life, and refused to play by the rules. Both hated desks, despised bureaucracy, and loved the field (Buckner bathed outside every morning by having his orderly melt the ice in his bathtub with a blow torch). Rather than deal with the prim Butler, Buckner simply went over Butler’s head and collaborated directly with Eareckson. The two men’s abrasive, uncontrollable personalities caused their superiors considerable heartburn, but neither was fired because these unorthodox characters produced results in what everyone recognized was a truly difficult environment.
Many writers have accused Eareckson of being “reckless” but this accusation fails close inspection. Eareckson never crashed, got shot down, or sent his men on a disastrous mission, despite countless opportunities to do so. One must therefore conclude that Eareckson was not actually “reckless” but merely fearless – he was exceedingly brave, but he took care of his men and did not make stupid mistakes. Eareckson never asked his men to do something he wouldn’t do; he flew bombing missions in every single position, from pilot to tail gunner, and he frequently took it upon himself to fly missions so dangerous he wouldn’t allow anyone else to do them. As air support coordinator during the May 11–30, 1943 Battle of Attu, Eareckson flew either a B-24 Liberator or an OS2U Kingfisher floatplane every day, despite the wretched weather. During much of the 20-day battle Eareckson was often the only USAAF plane overhead; he relentlessly orbited the completely fogged-in Attu literally all day, every day. In Eareckson’s mind, someone had to keep a minute-by-minute watch on the cloud cover – there was always a chance the clouds would briefly part and air support could be provided to the US infantrymen slogging down below. But Eareckson wasn’t about to let any of his own boys fly in such treacherous weather; the job had to be done, but he would keep them safe by doing it himself.

Изображение

Eareckson’s battlefield feats became almost legendary in this largely forgotten theater. On Attu, Eareckson kept a “bullet hole kit” of rubber plugs and cement in his Kingfisher to repair Japanese bullet holes in his floats – nevertheless Eareckson frequently had to beach the Kingfisher to avoid sinking. When a P-38 Lightning got shot down into the frigid waters off Attu, the Lightning pilot reported barely getting wet before he was suddenly lifted out of the water by his armpits – it was Eareckson, who, in his Kingfisher, had immediately followed the Lightning pilot down into the Bering Sea to rescue him. One afternoon, when the weather completely grounded him, an apparently bored Eareckson grabbed a rifle and hiked to the front lines, as if a tourist on vacation. Almost as soon as he arrived, Eareckson was grazed in the back by a Japanese sniper. Enraged, Eareckson emptied his rifle clip in the direction the bullet had come from, and multiple eyewitnesses reported Eareckson shooting the sniper dead. Eareckson then walked back to headquarters, where Buckner pinned a Purple Heart on him, before jokingly turning Eareckson around and kicking him in the backside in mock punishment, “for being where you had no business being.” Two years later Lieutenant-General Buckner would himself be killed at Okinawa while touring the front lines – the United States’ highest-ranking combat casualty of the Pacific War.
Colonel “Eric” Eareckson was one of the finest battlefield commanders of the war. But Eareckson’s exploits were doomed to be largely forgotten in a theater postwar America preferred not to remember, and his sarcasm, defiance, and incorrigibility ensured he would never be promoted to general. Eareckson retired from the US Air Force in 1954, after 13 years as a heavily-decorated colonel.

1. Joseph McGuire: Writing for Frostgrave: The Wizards' Conclave - 2019-03-07 08:29:09
Frostgrave: The Wizards' Conclave is the latest supplement to the best-selling fantasy wargame by Joseph A. McCullough, bringing a host of talented wargames designers to the frozen ruins of Felstad. On the blog today we have one such designer - Joseph McGuire - talking about the scenario he wrote for the book.
I’ve known Joe McCullough for a long time. We worked at a gaming store together many moons ago and I would see him at the occasional US convention over the years when he would fly over to the US from the misty shores of Albion. His success with Frostgrave is both well-earned and not surprising. For those not familiar with myself, I am a long time miniatures addict and wrote and published This Is Not a Test (TNT), a little wargame about death and profit in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. TNT has done well for itself and I think because of this, Joe nicely thought to include me in the amazing line up for The Wizard’s Conclave. To call such an inclusion an honor would not do it justice. After all, I am sharing page space with the likes of Andy Chambers, Gav Thorpe and other hobby luminaries. I swore a mighty oath, not to fail Joe!
But when an old chum like Joe asks you to write a scenario for Frostgrave, what do you give him? I knew the answer could neither be mundane nor boring. I had to bring my A game. I considered and discarded several fun, but totally impractical ideas, but I did settle on something a bit crazy. I always liked the idea of the old wizards of Felstad being so powerful that they were able to shape and direct the very foundations of magic. Before their lofty fall from on high they both mastered magic and enslaved whole planes of existence to their will. One such powerful wizard was Sargash, a mighty metamage whose tower was filled with wondrous planar magics. Each floor was rumored to be a self-contained world with its own rules and magical properties. Now imagine if that tower fell to the ground and its magics broke apart, but still the original magic wards keep things contained, albeit a bit more horizontal.

Изображение

Artwork by Kate and Dmitry Burmak
Now of course such a mighty tower will not just lay there, begging to be picked clean. Oh no, that would be way too easy. The tower is magic and only appears under rare conditions and by entering it you risk being trapped within its confines should your wizard fail to escape. Such is the danger that meets your wizards and his companions. As with all things Frostgrave, there are no shortage of insanely brave adventurers willing to risk everything for fame and profit, but what will your warbands face?
Well first, it’s a very tight board. The original tower was tall and thin. Resting on the ground, the tower is represented on the table by a 24” wide x 48”’ long board. This board is then further divided into four sections and your warbands must traverse from left to right. Each section, called a Zone of Magic, has its own properties. For instance, the first zone uses the following rules:
The Waves of Cruxix – The very air is infused with the primordial essence of magic, causing even the weakest mage to burst with raw magical power. Though such power can be dangerous when tapped. Spellcasters gain a +2 to Casting Rolls; however, double the damage done by spell failure.
As you can see, this can dramatically shape your wizards casting ability, but at greater risk. As the models cross over into the next zone, things change dramatically, from increased physical density to raw waves of necromantic magic. Of course, such risk is not without rewards. As a capstone, the scenario includes a special reward; The Boon of Sargosh. This counts as a Staff of Casting, but the player can choose the spell contained within. For the lucky wizard that grabs it, this is a great way to make a particularly thematic wizard.
So in the end, I think I provided the new book with something a bit different and a fun challenge. It was a true honor to be included and I hope everyone enjoys playing the new scenarios. As an aside, sorry, not sorry, should any of your wizard’s hirelings fall inside the tower.

1. ANNOUNCEMENT: JUDGE DREDD: HELTER SKELTER - 2019-03-11 15:00:00
OSPREY GAMES ANNOUNCES JUDGE DREDD: HELTER SKELTER

Изображение

The worlds of Judge Dredd, Sláine, Strontium Dog, and Nikolai Dante will be crashing onto tabletops around the globe in October 2019 with the release of Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter, a new miniatures board game building on the critically acclaimed Wildlands series from designer Martin Wallace.
The game brings some of 2000 AD’s most well-known characters to the streets of Mega-City One, fighting for the shattered fragments of their own universe! Faction-specific action decks and new special character abilities give each group their own playstyle, from the well-armed Judges with their explosive ammo to the bestial fury of Sláine and his Celtic allies. Playing to your faction’s strengths and exploiting your opponents’ weaknesses will be the key to claiming victory on the streets of Mega-City One.
Artwork from 2000 AD artists Rufus Dayglo, Clint Langley, Simon Fraser, and Chris Weston brings the authentic comic-book feel to the card art, while the twenty unique miniatures sculpted by Bobby Jackson, David Lee-Whitaker, and Jason Wiebe transport these characters from the page to the tabletop.
Speaking about the project, designer Martin Wallace said ‘When they burst onto the scene in the 1970s, 2000 AD and Judge Dredd were absolutely revolutionary. I was hooked immediately by the amazing story lines and characters. It is a privilege that after many years one of my designs is to be used to retell those stories in a different manner, through the lens of a board game.’
Matt Smith, editor at 2000 AD, commented ‘The worlds of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic are some of the most exciting, dangerous and thrilling in the known universe – so when the likes of Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Nikolai Dante and Sláine collide, as they do in the high-octane Helter Skelter, you’re guaranteed a fun time! 2000 AD is very excited to have teamed up with Osprey Games on this explosive new miniatures board game, and there’s no doubt that fans will have a blast!’
Games Developer Filip Falk Hartelius added ‘It has been a joy to work on Helter Skelter, bringing together the work of so many different illustrators and sculptors into one incredible whole. It is truly a labour of many people’s love – I’m really proud of this one.’
***
Something in the multiverse has shattered, and now the universe is bleeding. Throughout Mega-City One there are reports of invaders wreaking havoc. Celtic barbarians in Ezquerra Block. Russian nobles in Apetown. And rumours of fragments of other universes scattered across the city, waiting to be claimed.
Head to the streets of Mega-City One with Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter, a new miniatures board game combining Martin Wallace’s critically-acclaimed Wildlands rules with the worlds of 2000 AD. Four unique factions bring iconic characters from Sláine, Nikolai Dante, and Strontium Dog crashing into Mega-City One, all intent on finding the shattered fragments of their own universe and crushing anyone who gets in their way.
Things are going to get rough, but one thing is certain. No matter what universe you are from, you still have to answer to the Law!

Our first plate is from SU-76 Assault Gun, and shows a SU-76M, 8 SAB, Belorussian front, February 1944. The 8th SPG Brigade was well known for its use of the Ptisa v kruge (bird in a circle) insignia. This was applied in red over whitewash or in white when on the usual 4BO camouflage green. The hoirzontal bars over the bird indicated the battalion, in this case the 2nd Battalion. The small triangles below indicated the battery, in this case the 4th Battery.

On the right, a depiction of Michael Howe in Van Dieman's Land, c. 1818, whose ragged appearance is based on eyewitness descriptions of the wild-eyed bushranger. In the centre we see 'Bold Jack' Donohoe, c. 1830, the most celebrated of the early New South Wales bushrangers who paraded his defiance of authority by wearing clothes that mocked the fashionable pretensions of the colonial elite.

1. Could you survive in the Georgian Navy? - 2019-03-15 08:52:40
Rigidly organised and harshly disciplined, the Georgian Royal Navy was an efficient fighting force, but life in its service could also be brutal. Do you have what it takes to survive just some of the problems faced by its officers and sailors? Take this quick quiz to find out.

Изображение

‘Heaving the lead’ from John Augustus Atkinson, A picturesque representation of the naval, military, and miscellaneous costumes of Great Britain (London, 1807)
You’ve joined the Navy of your own volition, but now you’ve committed a crime whilst at sea! What was the offence?
a) Swearing
b) Drunkenness
c) Failing to do your utmost whilst in command of a fleet
If you chose a), congratulations, you survived! You might have your rations or privileges suspended, but you get off lightly compared to those who chose b). The punishment for drunkenness was flogging, a fate some considered worse than death, and which could sometimes lead to it due to the severity of the injuries it caused. If you chose c) your number was definitely up. The punishment for senior officers who failed to engage with enemy ships, to encourage their men to fight, or who called for a retreat was execution by firing squad!
A disaster has befallen the ship! What’s happening?
a) A fire!
b) We’ve run aground!
c) A tempest!
If you chose a) or c) your chances of survival were very low. Fire spread quickly across wooden ships and was difficult to extinguish in cramped conditions, while the quantities of gunpowder stored aboard caused horrific explosions. Meanwhile, storms were the cause of some of the greatest disasters in naval history, and all rescue attempts had to wait until clement weather, at which point it was usually too late. However, if you ran aground, there was a chance you could make it to the safety of the shore…
You’ve made it ashore and the ship has been repaired, but the captain has brutally beaten some of the men and violent mutiny has broken out. What’s your plan?
a) Keep your head down and try to stay out of it
b) Become one of the mutiny’s ringleaders
c) Join up with the captain and senior officers
If you chose b), it’ll be the end of the road sooner or later. Even if you successfully carry off the mutiny, the Georgian Admiralty looked harshly on mutineers and would do their utmost to ensure they were hunted down and executed for their crimes, even years after they were committed. You’d have a better chance if you joined up with the senior officers, as you might only be imprisoned or dismissed by the mutineers, as happened to the crew of the HMS Chesterfield. That said, they might also kill you. Best go unnoticed and make sure you’re on the right side when the outcome seems clear.
You’ve survived punishments, shipwrecks and mutiny, but now you’re beginning to feel alarmingly under the weather. What’s the problem?
a) Scurvy
b) Yellow fever
c) An infected wound
If you picked a) or b) your chances were low, as an illness at sea was frequently a death sentence. Scurvy was rampant on long voyages and frequently deadly; of the 1,995 men who took part in George Anson’s circumnavigation of the world from 1740-44, two-thirds died, many of them due to scurvy. Yellow fever was similarly deadly – of the 200 people who contracted the disease on the Alfred in mid-July 1796, less than a third survived even three days. Your best chance was an infected wound. If complications from the amputation didn’t kill you, and the infection hadn’t spread beyond the limb, you might have made it!

If you enjoyed this quiz, you can find out more in How to Survive in the Georgian Navy, which explores what it was like to be a sailor the period from 1714 to 1820. The book examines the Navy within its wider historical, national, organisational and military context during this period, and reveals exactly what it took to survive a life in its service. Covering fascinating topics as wide-ranging as exploration, mutiny, storms, shipwrecks, and women on board ships, author Bruno Pappalardo uses extracts from contemporary documents and writings to reconstruct the experiences of the Navy’s sailors and officers in vivid detail.
