1. ICM 1/48 I-153 "Chaika" (48095) - 2015-12-17 23:27:00

New biplane from ICM

ICM keeps on pressing with new models, and today we have a chance to check new plastic kit, which copies famous Soviet "Chaika" biplane in 1/48 scale. If you remember our previous reviews, in the beginning of this year Ukrainian manufacturer introduced the same airplane in 1/72 scale. In case you've missed the article, you can check here full review of small I-153. Nevertheless, this time all 1/48 scale fans have a chance to build the same fighter in bigger dimensions. Kit is packed into a traditional sturdy white cardboard box, which is covered with color-printed top part. Inside you can find 100 plastic parts, which should assemble into model 130mm long and wingspan equal to 208mm. Let's check all those parts closer.

All sprues are packed into the same plastic bag, so be careful and check everything before the purchase. I have to note here that at least small transparent sprue has its own small bag, so it won't be scratched during shipment. The first sprue contains large wings as well as some small elements for internal and external detalization.

Both wings are molded as one-piece parts. Easy to notice that the top one has integral ailerons, while the bottom wing is designed together with wheel wells. Of course, tailwings are also molded as single-piece. Another notable feature is a detailed engine that should look good in assembled state. No doubt that aftermarket manufacturers would try to tackle this area in order to get even better detalization.

Fuselage halves are placed on narrow separate plastic frames. Parts division is quite unusual, because left half is molded with tail segment and rudder, while another one - without. Both parts have nice recessed panel lines and rivetting. Top and front cowling parts are designed as separate elements, so that you won't have seams and gaps in those areas.

Flip over both sprues and the first thing you see - almost no cockpit detalization, because it should be assembled from separate parts. Another useful feature - positioning pins, which should help with alignment.

Last grey plastic sprue contains bombs and some other types of external armament. Molding quality on the same level, so there is no flash or any other possible damage.

Yes, some bombs should be assembled from two halves, while others are molded as single-piece parts out of the box. Transparent sprue is basically a frame that should protect the only clear part in the kit - canopy. This one is molded in excellent quality, and I would recommend to search for aftermarket masks.

Decals sheet is not big and contains red stars with numbers. Printing quality is good, and I hope that application would be easy enough. Note that there is special decal for cockpit dashboard.

Assembly manual has the front and the last pages printed in color. Note that there is a short history note on the first page.

Then comes parts map. Again, you can see that all parts should be used for the model.

I guess it should be hard to get lost in such detailed explanations.

Of course, on the last pages modeler can find rigging guide. There is also a marking guide that contains profies for four marking options.

I guess this biplane can be a breath of fresh air after all those typical German and allies fighter aircrafts. Even smaller kit in 1/72 scale proved to be a nice kit, and now we have a chance to assemble the same airplane in 1/48. No worries here, even in this size assembled airplane won't be big. As for detalization, ICM tried to implement all possible features, so that you can have realistic biplane without buying any extras. Nevertheless, as I said in the review, there is no doubt that aftermarket companies would produce PE accessories for "Chaika".As usual, you can find this kit on official ICM website.Don't forget to like our Facebook page, so that you can get fresh articles on time.
+++Pros++++Excellent molding quality+Well-thought parts division+Good decals
---Cons----No masks-Biplane construction might be challenging for beginners

Scale Model News Xtra

1. INCOMING: SECRET SOVIET LUNAR SPACECRAFT TO 1:48 SCALE

A detailed 1:48 scale kit of the one-man Soviet LK Lunar Lander, built to beat NASA to the Moon in the heady Space Race days of the 1960s.

US company Fantastic Plastic offers this first-ever 1:48 scale model kit of the Soviet LK Moon Lander. The kit was designed in CAD by resident aerospace expert, Scott Lowther, who has combined key components of the three known LK lander designs.

In Fantastic Plastic's words, "It was printed in high resolution stereolithography by Scicon Industries and cast by Mana Studios. Our kit includes more than 150 pieces, including a sheet of photo-etch brass details by ParaGrafix, a moonscape display base and an in-scale Soviet Cosmonaut figure. Decals are by JBOT. The original cover illustration is by professional box art designer Denis Podgorniy.

"Due to the kit's complexity, we eschewed traditional printed instructions in favor of a CD-ROM that contains a step-by-step building guide using the same CAD model used to produce the kit.

"We began offering the Soviet LK Moon Lander kit to our reservation holders last week and the first run of 50 castings sold out within 24 hours. We have another 50 castings in the works and expect to receive them in two to three weeks."

For diorama fans, FP has included a 140mm (5.5) square moonscape display base, a 1:48 scale cosmonaut figure, plus a Soviet flag to stand in the simulated lunar regolith.

About the real thing
Soviet rocket designer Sergei Korolev conceived a twin-spacecraft lunar-lander system, similar to the Apollo concept, albeit carrying only one cosmonaut to the Moon's surface instead of the two that flew in the US Lunar Module.

The main LOK (Lunny Orbitalny Korabl) spacecraft would ferry 2-3 cosmonauts to lunar orbit. Once there, a cosmonaut would spacewalk from the LOK to the docked LK (Lunny Korabl) lunar lander.

The LK used a single engine for both landing and takeoff, the LK's landing gear serving as a launch pad, while the upper section returned to the orbiting LOK. The pilot-cosmonaut would then have spacewalked back into the LOK for the return flight to Earth.

Several LK prototypes were built, and three were tested in Earth orbit in the mid-1960s. However, the giant N-1 booster built for the Moon mission failed repeatedly, the entire N-1 program being abandoned in the early 1970s. With that decision, LOK and LK development also stopped, and so did all plans for Soviet cosmonauts on the Moon.

Summation
Looks like a terrific kit, and would make a natural partner for a combined Apollo-LK double-diorama, maybe even a what-if scenario, with crews from both the US and Soviet Union shaking hands!

2. INCOMING: TWIN-FIN MiG-25 FOXBAT INTERCEPTOR FROM KITTY HAWK MODELS

A 1:48 scale kit from Kitty Hawk Models that captures the lines of the famed MiG-25 Foxbat very well indeed.

This high-speed machine from Russian designers Mikoyan and Gurevich - NATO codename Foxbat - really raised eyebrows in the West when it first went into service in 1970.

For pure speed, the MiG-25 was a winner. The prototype flew in 1964, demonstrating a top speed of more than Mach 2.8, while being equipped with a powerful radar system and a quartet of air-to-air missiles. Actually, the mighty MiG could go even faster than this, being tested at more than Mach 3, but as the engines risked burnout at this speed, in-service performance was somewhat slower.

The pictures reveal how much work the engineers at Kitty Hawk Models have put into the 1:48 scale kit, with the brass parts being particularly noteworthy. Overall, the detail is handled well, though the model will repay careful spray work, so as not to fill the many countersunk rivets and panel lines. The trick is to waft several ultra-light coats of paint, rather than risk a heavier swamping blast, which will risk ruining all of Kitty Hawk's hard work.

The nose radar is carefully modelled, and allows you to choose whether to show it off or cover it with the long radome.

Parts are supplied for the single-seat or somewhat ungainly two-seater. Whichever you choose (we'd buy two kits and do both) Kitty Hawk have supplied the necessary components. The canopies open sideways, which is correct, and a full set of underwing stores can be carried.

MiGs of this era were built for rough-field performance, operating in conditions ranging from the frozen wastes of Siberian winters to the heat and dust of bases around the Black Sea. With those extremes in mind, the landing gear was typically rugged, with twin nose-wheels and hefty main gear.

As you can see from pictures of the real thing (two shown at bottom), there is a much scope for weathering the MiG-25 with plenty of dirt and grunge. Like many Russian aircraft then and now, rough-field service adds an element of work and wear that's rarely encountered by Western types - or maybe we just clean our combat machines more!

So, all in all, an attractive and biggish kit that measures some 210mm (16.2in) long when assembled. Carefully paint the cockpit and wheel well details, add some service grime, and you'll have a weather-beaten Foxbat model that will look terrific on the display shelf.

The Kitty Hawk Models MiG-25 should be in stores shortly; meantime the excellent 1:48 scale F-35 Lightning II is available here now.

Single and two-seater versions can be built. Neatly-moulded cockpits provide food for detail freaks.

The MiG-25 radar used vacuum tubes, though that's not so primitive as it sounds, as the technology was more radiation-proof than transistors of the time, a big plus for the atomic-age Cold War era.

Gorgeous detailing in the wheel wells, and on the doors too. Ordnance looks convincing, too.

Camera ports and plenty of weathering apparent in this closeup pic (above) while low altitude shot (below) shows the somewhat ungainly lines of the two-seater.

3. NAMED AFTER THE 9/11 ATTACKS: USS NEW YORK, NOW A 1:350 SCALE MODEL FROM REVELL

The USS New York, Amphibious Transport Dock LPD-2, is a brand-new 1:350 scale kit from Revell Germany. The ship was named after the city that bore the brunt of the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Mat Irvine reports: The kit box is packed with parts, mostly styrene, though there are a number in brass photo-etch, a common practice these days for many kits, especially ships, where metal can reproduce tiny details far better than plastic.

Most of the styrene parts are moulded in light grey, building up into a three-deck ship that uses a lot of stealth technology in its design.

The on-board aircraft and helicopters are moulded in clear styrene. This allows the windows to remain clear, while other colours are painted around them.

And you get a lot of airborne craft. In all, there are five vertical-takeoff types included, and the distinction has to be made as, although four are rotary-wing helicopters - CH-53E Sea Stallion, CH-46 Sea Knight, AH-1W Cobra and UN-1N Twin Huey - the fifth type is a VTOL fixed-wing aircraft, the MV-22 Osprey.

You also get two LCAC hovercraft, two AAV7 amphibious personnel carriers, and one LCU landing craft.

The instruction sheet, runs to 125 steps over 24 pages. There is a full-colour paint chart showing the ship itself on one side, plus equipment on the other. Two large full-colour decal sheets supply the ship and helicopter markings, and also the line markings for the rear landing deck.

The hull is a one-piece moulding, meaning that (in theory) it could be made to float, as long as the holes for the drives to the propeller screws are sealed. There is even a length of metal chain, supplied to hold the anchor.

However, a floating USS New York is not Revell’s real intention, as there is a supplied stand, moulded in black. The various aircraft can sit on the rear deck, but waterborne craft are left somewhat loose, but of course are ideal if you go for a water diorama.

The real thing
The three decks of USS New York give 2300 square metres of space. There are 360 in the ship’s crew, while the combat complement can include up to 800 Marines. Landing craft berth in the rear - floodable - dock, and although there is the large landing deck, helicopters are not permanently onboard, but are assigned to each individual mission.

The ship was named after a request from the Mayor of New York to the then Secretary of the Navy, at the time of the 9/11 attack. This was agreed, the ship being launched on December 19, 2007, going into service in December 2009.

Most significantly, the USS New York incorporates some 6.8 tonnes of steel, salvaged from the wrecked Twin Towers.

4. SAUCER SIGHTING: C-57D SPACE CRUISER FROM ‘FORBIDDEN PLANET’ ZOOMS IN FROM POLAR LIGHTS

Forbidden Planet, ‘the’ classic 1950s science-fiction movie, memorably gave us not only Robby the Robot, but also the C-57D Space Cruiser. Polar Lights has already issued a larger kit of this flying saucer, but has now come up with a brand new, half-size version to 1:144 scale.

Mat Irvine reports: Opening the almost-square box reveals 22 parts in silver plastic and 17 in clear. This is a very simple kit to assemble, though it makes an impressive model when completed, being 304mm (12in) in diameter.

The main saucer components are individual upper and lower halves, held together with locating pegs. The upper dome is one large part while the lower dome that houses the engine is moulded in transparent plastic. This can be left clear to show engine detail, or overpainted to match the rest of the hull

There are two basic build options. In flying mode, the C-57D has its landing gear retracted, the ‘glowing engine’ revealed under the clear dome. In landing mode on the desert floor of Altair IV (and how it is seen for most of the movie) the landing legs are down, as are the entry steps.

There is no supplied stand for flying mode, but the instructions indicate that you should suspend the C-57D by a nylon line, achieving this by opening up a hole in the upper dome, conveniently indicated with a dimple on the underside of the part.

On the ground, the C-57D sits on the lowered engine centre-section, balanced with the help of three landing legs, one of which also forms the stairs for the crew, while a second has a conveyor belt for equipment. The third is just a leg, though some sources indicate it should also have a conveyor belt. The legs can be snapped in the raised or lowered position.

The colour of the craft is silver, basically the colour of any self-respecting flying saucer, though the saucer’s outer ring is a darker shade. I painted the review kit in Testors colours, using Gloss Metallic Silver spray, with the darker ring in Titanium. However, these shades can be matched with similar ones from Humbrol, Tamiya, Revell-Germany, or even Alclad, which makes excellent metallic paints for airbrushes.

The only splashes of colour are red handrails for the stairs and 16 engine panels. I brushed on Tamiya Clear Red for the latter.

Unfortunately, no figures are included in the kit, which ought to be possible, even at the small 1:144 scale. However, I sat the completed C-57D model in the background of a desert diorama, with the Polar Lights Robby in the foreground to produce a classic scene from this classic movie.

A word about the first Polar Lights C-57D kit. This was first issued in 2001, and is to 1:72 scale, with a saucer diameter of 710mm (28in). The kit has a complete interior, and lift-off panels, though originally this too had no crew figures, just Robby the Robot - and he didn’t even travel on the ship! However, Polar Lights reissued the kit in 2009, this time including a selection of figures. Alternatively, 1:72 scale figures are widely available, and with a bit of modification could be made to resemble the astronauts in the movie.

There is one overriding query with both kits, and that is scale, a quandary that applies to many, arguably most, models of science-fiction craft.

This is not helped as there doesn’t appear to be any definitive ‘real’ size ever given of the ship. The largest special-effects miniature was 2235mm (88in) in diameter (and there were also several smaller models) but this doesn’t give any indication of a what a full-size ‘real’ C-57D would be.

The nearest clue is a quote published in a 1979 double-issue of the specialist movie magazine ‘Cinefantastique’, that gives the intended size of the C-57D as 100ft (30m). This was based on quotes from various members of production crew at the time, borne out by taking calculations from stills of the movie, where the whole of the ship is seen and with figures in shot. If this is the case, the smaller model works out to around 1:100 scale and the larger to about 1:43 scale.

But with these film shots you are not usually looking at a real image. Part of the lower section of the saucer - the stairs and landing legs - was built as scenery, but other shots are composites using special effects miniatures or artwork, combined with real actors on the film stage set. Consequently the size of what could be a ‘real’ C-57D, is really arbitrary.

Other estimates have suggested the craft is as large as 175ft (53m) in diameter, which then makes the scales respectively 1:175 and 1:75. Then again, plans in the ‘Ship’s Information Booklet’ for the C-57D, issued in 1983 from The Norton Group, indicate the diameter as 162ft 9in (49.6m). So here, putting aside the dubious reasoning of a such a precise figure for what is after all a piece of fiction, you have potential scales of 1:163 and 1:70.

Old and new kit boxes are shown above and below. Reasonably enough, the 1:144 scale is the smaller of the two.

So you have to take your pick where scale is concerned, but it is still good to have a new kit of the spaceship from one of the best science-fiction films ever made.

5. NORFOLK AND SUFFOLK AVIATION MUSEUM: AIRCRAFT BIG AND SMALL ON DISPLAY, AND THERE'S FREE ENTRY!

Here’s a great place to go if you like the magic combo of old aircraft, nostalgia and memorabilia, with some fascinating models included in the mix.

The Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum (NSAM) is in the village of Flixton, near Bungay, in Suffolk, UK. There’s a collection of aircraft parked on the grass, ranging from an ex-Royal Navy de Havilland Sea Vixen twin-boom jet to an FMA Pucara ground-attack machine that dates from the 1982 Falklands War.

There’s also a group of slowly decomposing engine and propeller components, which are gradually gnarling and delaminating with age, revealing a range of textures that fascinated my sculptress friend Bo.

Hangars and Nissen huts provide dry storage and display space for plenty more items, and there are lots of models and miniatures to inspect. Among these was a display of hand-carved wooden models, necessarily lacking the fine detailing of a plastic kit, but showing off the talented skills of a pure craft approach to model making.

The RAF Air Sea Rescue and Coastal Command Display had several dioramas to look at, and extremely well done they were too, especially the convincing water effects.

When we’d had our fill of the museum, there was a cafe in the main hangar with a cuppa waiting, and one of the gals behind the counter was in excellent World War II retro gear. All in all, an excellent place to visit - and with free entry, what’s not to like?

6. END OF THE ROAD FOR MODELZONE CHAIN OF HOBBY STORES

The joint administrators of the UK Modelzone store chain have confirmed that all remaining stores are set to close by mid-September.

The decision to shut the last 18 stores was reached after no offers were received for the business.

Richard Hawes, joint administrator and partner in Deloitte's restructuring services practice, said, “We sought to find a potential buyer for some or all of the stores, but unfortunately no viable offers have come in since our appointment two months ago.

“Modelzone has been generating losses over the past few years, largely through an increase in online competition and having taken leases on new stores that proved to be unprofitable.

“Once again, we would like to thank the company's employees for their support and professionalism during this time.”

When Deloitte's were appointed in June 2013, Modelzone had 47 stores, with 385 staff. In happier days, Modelzone had been a big operator in the UK miniatures business. Below, racing driver Rodolfo Gonzales is shown opening a London Modelzone store.

It’s not a total loss though, for the Amerang part of the group was purchased in July, by Ripmax Limited, through the newly incorporated company Pinehurst 104.

Amerang presently posts a 'coming soon' website, though Ripmax has a lot more to say.

Plenty of Radio Control (RC) stuff from Ripmax here.
7. AMAZING AND EXTRAORDINARY: FLYING SCALE YAK-130 TWO-SEATER JET

Two years ago, at the 2011 9th Jet World Masters championship in the US, a flying scale Yak-130 was awarded top prize for being at the limit of accuracy, setting a new standard in its class. And now it's been much improved, in time to go back on display again, this time in Switzerland.

The video shows what you can do if you really want to, though it's interesting to note how few parts are made of metal. Chasing the flying model's weight down meant that carbon fibre and other lightweight materials were used extensively in the Yak-130's construction. The real thing (below and header) is an attractive machine that first flew in 1996. It's presently flown by the Russian and Algerian air arms.

This year, the 10th Jet World Masters 2013 competition is being held at Meiringen Airbase, Switzerland. If other flying models on display are anywhere near as good, then it'll be worth a trip there to see flying scale models in action.

10th Jet World Masters 2013 opens today, and continues until September 1.

Note to mobile users: the vid may not display, so here is the YouTube link.

8. ON THE RADAR: AIRBUS A350-900 MODEL KIT DUE FROM REVELL IN NOVEMBER 2013

The new Airbus A350-900 made its maiden flight just two months ago, but already Revell is preparing a kit of the latest jetliner from Europe’s premier aircraft manufacturer.

Kit details are sparse at present and we have no pictures yet, but we do know that the A350-900 will be to 1:144 scale and that there will be 120 components.

Fully assembled the Revell A350-900 will measure 453mm (17.8in) long and have a wingspan of 450mm (17.7in). And that shows how big this jetliner is in real life - in traditional 1:72 scale, it would measure almost a yard long!

About the real thing
The Airbus A350 is a new-design Airbus wide-body aircraft, designed to carry up to 314 passengers on routes of up to 15000km (9315ml). Wide use of composite materials in the structure mean a big weight reduction over traditional aluminium construction, and this, combined with state of the art Rolls-Royce Trent engines should give a claimed operating cost of some 10 percent less than the competing Boeing 787.

Mind you, that’s manufacturer’s hyperbole - we’ll only find out the nitty-gritty truth on economic performance when the A350 enters service, and that won’t be until late 2014. Meantime, components such as this nose section come together at the Airbus final assembly plant near Toulouse, France.

The corporate video (below) is a fascinating one that gives just a hint of the extraordinary complexity that goes into making a modern jetliner. Note to mobile phone and tablet users - the software we use is a bit iffy where video is concerned. So if all you get is a blank where the vid is supposed to be, apologies from SMN, but you'll be able to view it on a desktop or laptop.

Like the Boeing 787, the A350-900 is a good-looking machine, and we can’t wait for the Revell miniature to arrive, just in time to make an extra item in a plane-buff’s Christmas stocking.

Fleets of airliners kits here.
9. INCOMING: NEW-TOOL MASCHINEN KRIEGER 1:20 SCALE SCI-FI KITS FROM HASEGAWA

A realistic-looking 1:20 scale walker bot stalks the surface of our neighbouring Moon, while back in the service bay, a same-scale figure set maintains the equipment.

The Hasegawa 1:20 scale Luna Tactical Reconnaissance LUM-168 Camel is one of many futuristic war machines that feature in the Japanese Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K) science-fiction series. This new-tool kit features 225 components and includes multiple decal options.

It looks great as is, but if you’re not so keen on the Ma.K universe, or you simply wish to make a kit-bashed version, then you can customize it how you like. The Ma.K series makes a useful change from Star Wars and Star Trek, the machinery looking just that bit different to the tech that features in either of these long-running movie franchises.

It’s perhaps a pity that the 1:20 scale is a bit of a one-off, or at least not a standard kit scale such as 1:24/25. Having said that, Ma.K fits nicely (well, near enough, anyway) into the diecast standard scale of 1:18, so there could be plenty to work with there.

The 1:20 scale gives a figure height of approximately 90mm (3.5in), plenty big enough to pack in a good level of detail, yet small enough to stand on an average shelf-top display zone.

The 1:20 scale Figure Set A Mercenary Troops makes an excellent accessory for any matching-scale Ma.K models. It features four highly detailed figures - three male, one female - plus the assorted tools they use, such as hammer, spanner and wrench, and a decal set.

These figures represent a maintenance group, so the tools make a lot of sense. There are 87 components in the box, the figures taking 46 components, the tools 41.

For those not familiar with the Ma.K sci-fi universe, there’s a longish piece of backstory here.

Figure set, LUM-168, and other Ma.K stuff from Hasegawa here.
10. INCOMING: AIRFIX NEW-TOOL HARRIER GR1 TO 1:72 SCALE

It’s good to see that 1:72 scale is still occupying kit manufacturers, and here’s a useful new-tool kit from Airfix, featuring the famed Harrier GR1 ‘jump-jet.’

The Harrier is a small aircraft, so the kit is not a shelf-filler by any means, with a wingspan of just 107mm (4.2in) and length of 148mm (5.8in). Even so, there are plenty of parts in the box, with 89 neatly-moulded components to be assembled.

Airfix has included a choice of markings for the aircraft - No1 (F) Squadron, RAF, operational at RAF Wittering, UK, in September 1970, and No20 (R) Squadron, RAF, as flown from Wildenrath, West Germany, in June the following year.

Kit components are well finished, with the cockpit transparency looking particularly clear. Even at this scale, it would be nice to see more internal detail, perhaps accessed via removable panels, but let’s not quibble - as it stands, the Airfix Harrier GR1 will make up into a convincing little model.

There are plenty of options for display, perhaps the most interesting being to create a camouflaged dispersal, as used in war game practise in Cold War days. Airfix makes plenty of 1:72 scale personnel, so it would be relatively easy to produce a good-looking - and busy - diorama on this theme.

About the Harrier GR1
Developed in the 1960s as the world's first truly successful V/STOL combat aircraft, the British Hawker-Siddeley Harrier was a winner, even in its earliest operational version, the GR1 featured in this kit. The Harrier matured into a highly effective CAS (close air support), recon, and ground attack machine that saw service in West Germany, Norway, and was deployed to Belize for a time, when neighbouring Guatamala was making territorial claims.

11. FUTURISTIC FLYER FROM PLATZ: NORTHROP GRUMMAN X-47B UNMANNED COMBAT AIR SYSTEM TO 1:48 SCALE

This kit, from the Japanese model company Platz, represents the Northrop-Grumman X-47B, an unmanned US Navy aircraft recently in the headlines for its aircraft-carrier flight tests.

Mat Irvine reports: The Platz kit has 53 parts on two runners of light grey plastic, plus a comprehensive decal sheet, with instructions in Japanese and English.

The kit is fairly simple to assemble, and the parts are an excellent fit, although care will be required with the tiny antennas on both upper and lower surfaces.

Most of the Platz X-47B is a dull neutral grey - FS (Federal Standard) 36270 - but the place where the cockpit for a human pilot might normally be is taken up by the engine intake.

The recessed section of the intake is painted gloss white, a colour that also applies to the inner surfaces of the underside bays, wheel wells, and doors that close over them.

If you want to spray-finish in white, you will need to paint these parts first, then mask and apply grey over the top. This is also necessary as the kit is designed to be assembled with the landing gear down, all doors open, as shown below. Note that the edge seals are red, though this does not show up in many photos of the real thing.

There is no option for building the model in flight-mode, and no stand is provided for this. However, it would be possible to remove the ‘hinge’ representations from the doors, and fit them in place, flush to the surface. These tasks would be relatively easy to achieve by any competent modeller.

Even with the landing gear down, there are two options for finishing the kit. The X-47B is quite large, about the size of an F-18 Hornet, so it has folding outer wing sections for easy hangar storage. The kit can be finished with these sections folded, and the upper-wing airbrakes can also be assembled open or closed. Finally, two GBU-32 bombs are supplied, one for each weapon bay.

The only item not featured in the kit (an odd omission, as it is visible in many photos) is the arrester hook, necessary for aircraft-carrier use.

Note the upper surface intake and assorted antennas. The air intake is fitted into place from the inside (below). Note that it has already been painted gloss white on the external side.

Painting the landing gear and weapon bays gloss white (above) is followed by masking them off, so the main neutral grey can be applied.

Probably the trickiest part of the build is in applying the decals. As with many modern aircraft, marker lines can be found on many of the surfaces. The decal sheet supplies all of these, and although they appear quite complex on the box-art, they are logical to apply. In some cases, other markings such as NO STEP, are part of the lines, which makes working out positioning easier. You can build either of the two X-47Bs, numbered 501 or 502.

The X-Planes
The X-Plane experimental aerospace craft series is the best known of all American research projects, and began with the Bell X-1 rocket plane, back in 1946. Below, X-47B 501 takes off from Edwards Air Force Base, California.

X-Series craft are not necessarily individual machines. They are designated primarily as overall research projects, so a single X number can be applied to several craft that may not be the same design. Below, X-47B 502 in flight, showing its upper surface markings clearly. Note the weathering, which on the Platz model can be replicated with some careful airbrushing.

The X-47B shown in these pictures evolved from the X-47A Pegasus that first flew in 2003. This was smaller, and somewhat different in shape to the B, as it lacked the outer wings and had only an 8.5m (27.8 ft) wingspan. The bigger X-47B has a 19m (62ft) wingspan, and is 11.5m (38ft) long. It is designed primarily for the US Navy, and first flew in February 2011. Below, the X-47B shows off its arrester hook, a component that's missing from the Platz kit.

The X-47B took off from the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush in May 2013. This was a record-breaker flight, being the first unmanned aircraft of its type to carry out carrier operations. The X-47B is shown below as it landed back on deck, and bottom, on a side elevator.

There are plans for an even larger version, the X-47C, which would have a wingspan of 52.5m (172ft).

12. INCOMING: SAAB J-29 ‘FLYING BARREL’ FROM TARANGUS, WITH LANSEN AND VIGGEN FLYING IN FORMATION

Swedish model outfit Tarangus has just released its 1:72 scale Saab J-29 Tunnan (‘Barrel’) and it looks an interesting little kit.

Tarangus hasn’t released too many details yet, but these pix show that the team has taken a lot of care with the production of this rotund jet, which first flew on September 1, 1948.

The components look clean and flash-free, though you will certainly need a cutter tool to free the smaller parts from their runners.

Resin parts (above) include items for the ejection seat, wheel wells and engine intake. The instrument panel (below) checks out as a precisely detailed component.

Flying colours are detailed for three J-29s, including those used for peacekeeping duties in the Republic of Congo, 1961-64, where they won top marks for combat capabilities during the mission. Note that the Swedish spelling of Congo is ‘Kongo’ as shown on the box back.

Tarangus has been making models for only four years. In the company’s words, “Tarangus AB was founded in 2009 by Fredrik Zetterberg, dedicated model maker, aviation enthusiast and sales expert, and Max Nykvist, professional photographer, hobby dealer, long time importer and producer of limited run plastic kits and accessories.

“These characteristics in combination was a great starting point for our company, Tarangus!

“Our dedicated vision is to develop, manufacture and market plastic models of the highest quality, focusing mainly on Swedish military aviation subjects. Quinta Essentia!”

That’s excellent news Fredric and Max, and it’s good to see the focus on Swedish metal. We particularly like the look of the 1:48 scale J-32B Lansen and the upcoming J-37 Viggen.

Lastly, here's an 'I want' for two 1:48 scale Saabs, the spindly-looking pusher-prop Saab J-21 (above) and the shapely cranked-delta Saab J-35 Draken, shown (below) lined up for action at a Swedish combat dispersal.

13. HASEGAWA EGG PLANE: SHENYANG J-15 FLYING SHARK CHINESE NAVY JET

“It's not eggs-actly copyright in-fridge-ment” says Hasegawa, introducing the latest in its long line of Egg Plane mini-kits, this one a Limited-Edition Shenyang J-15.

Hasegawa eggspertly goes on, “The Chinese Navy broke a whole carton of international egg-reements when they plucked all the juiciest features of the Russian Sukhoi-33 and used them to feather their own bird.

“If that's not eggs-asperating enough, the roost for these finagled fighters is an aircraft carrier lifted from the hen house under false pretenses. Other countries have squawked plenty, but they ended up with egg on their faces.

“Apparently, you can do anything when you're the cock of the walk. Ruffle some feathers when you crow about your Grade-A construction!”

Well, yes. However, stolen design or not, this Shenyang J-15 doesn’t get around the fact that Egg Planes are as delightful as ever, and if you’re even vaguely interested in the aerotoon genre, then this Chinese bird has to be on the must-build list. And it's easy enough, with just 36 parts to assemble.

And if you don’t know what an Egg Plane is, they are not ‘true scale’, instead being described by Hasegawa as, ‘Grade-A Jumbo Scale.’ They feature a roughly egg-shaped, distorted interpretation of a real world aircraft, and have a fairly low component-count, being aimed towards fun and collectability, rather than out-and-out scale perfection.

The real-life Shenyang J-15 Flying Shark (above) is a so-called 4.5 generation fighter, claimed to be more advanced than a 4G Eurofighter Typhoon, though less than the upcoming 5G Lockheed Martin F-35. The Chinese based the J-15 on the Russian Sukhoi Su-33, though the Russians doubt that the locally produced radars and weapon systems give it anything like a comparable performance, and look on the claimed figures with some doubt.

If true, the numbers are hugely impressive, with a J-15 top speed of Mach 2.4 at altitude. That's 2550km/h (1584mph) coupled with a staggering climb rate of 19,500 metres/minute (64,000ft/min), meaning that a J-15 can reach its maximum altitude in little more than 65 seconds.

Dozens of Egg Planes here.
14. INCOMING: ROYAL AIR FORCE RESUPPLY SET FROM AIRFIX

This neat diorama detailing set to 1:72 scale makes useful news from Airfix.

Of course, aircraft themselves are the hard-core focus of attention in any diorama setting, but sets like this make the process of modelling the background detail relatively easy.

The Airfix Resupply Set is packed with useful stuff, and we suspect that two or more packs will be on many modelmakers’ must-buy lists.

In fact, you’ll need two kits to make up the Bedford trucks - a bit of cheapskatery means that alternative parts allow only one type to be made from parts supplied in the box. Still, the spare components would look OK as extras in a simulated airfield parts dump.

Apart from this quibble, an excellent and interesting kit that deserves to be popular

What Airfix says
“...As the air war over occupied Europe progressively developed, so did the equipment used by the RAF and its Bomber Command. Specialist vehicles were introduced to supply arms and equipment to waiting machines and maintenance tasks were made easier through the introduction of specialised equipment.

“The mechanization of these tasks and duties is well represented in this set. While not as glamorous as their flying counterparts, the contribution played by trucks, tractors, and vans, as well as the men that crewed them, cannot be forgotten, or underestimated.”

What’s in the box?
* Standard light utility vehicle: 12hp 4x2 'Tilly'
* Bedford MWC or MWD (either can be constructed, not both)
* David Brown VIG1 tractor/tug

15. INCOMING: REVELL JUNKERS Ju-88 A4 KIT TO 1:32 SCALE

World War II aviation fans can look forward to this big-scale model of the widely-used Junkers Ju-88.

As our Revell promo pix show, the model looks extremely convincing when assembled, with plenty of attention paid to internal detailing. The underbelly pod looks good, with drop-down machine gun access. The main landing gear has the correct tyre tread pattern.

The tail wheel housing earns brownie points, with nicely-sculpted doors and a correct-length oleo for the support strut.

Control surfaces are separate components, and if you adjust them suitably, will look very convincing indeed.

No crew members are supplied, more’s the pity, but after-market figures are available.

As usual with 1:32 scale, you get a lot of kit in the box: in this case, 380 components to assemble, resulting in a finished model that has a suitably large wingspan of more than two feet - very satisfying!

About the real thing
The Ju-88 was a versatile combat aircraft, deployed variously as a dive bomber, night fighter, torpedo bomber, mine layer and for reconnaissance. Mass production of the Ju 88A-1 began in September 1939, but improvements led to the A4, a machine with better protective armour, more powerful engines, a more efficient wing and a two-tonne bomb load.

Standard bomber
The Ju-88 A4 went into mass-production, to become the Luftwaffe's standard bomber, and the basis for all further developments of the Ju 88. Some 15,000 were built.

Model details
* Additional parts supplied for this A-4 version
* Detailed control surfaces and recessed panel joints
* Super-detailed cockpit, including instrument panels and bomb-aimer’s equipment
* Detailed engine cowlings and rotating props
* Landing gear features rotating wheels, and neatly-produced tailwheel housing
* SC250 and SC500 bombs both supplied

16. DEATH OF THE MODELZONE CHAIN: MAT BRINGS BACK PICTURES FROM THE EDGE

Mat Irvine popped in to Milton Keynes, UK, to see how the local branch of the moribund Modelzone chain was doing today. The results you see here.

You can criticize Modelzone stores, especially the modest stock levels, but it's still a very sad day to see any model store going down, let alone 47 of them.

For casual buyers, perhaps Modelzone's main strength was in the range of diecast models they had on show, especially good where aircraft were concerned, with squadrons of Corgi and other brands lined up in well-lit showcases.

For items of specialist equipment, the chain was perhaps less successful, especially in supplying the miscellaneous bits and pieces required by serious builders of injection-moulded kits.

As for the empty hole that will soon open up in Modelzone's absence, perhaps the hugely busy AppleStore a couple of minutes away could use the space as overflow.

Even better, Apple could use it for the free training and support that makes the stores so useful for Mac owners.
17. UK GOVERNMENT BACKS LEADING-EDGE SABRE ENGINE: MEANTIME, YOU CAN FLY HIGH WITH THE HERPA 1:250 SCALE MODEL

SKYLON UPDATE: The UK Government is investing £60m GBP ($92m USD) on the Skylon's revolutionary Sabre engine, to enable a full-scale prototype to be built - so maybe this special edition model isn't pie-in-the-sky.
That political vote of confidence means that the designers now hope to see Sabre engines powering the Skylon spaceplane on operational flights by 2022, each ship carrying a 15-tonne payload into orbit.First test flights for the uncrewed vehicle are tentatively scheduled three years earlier, in 2019. As a passenger-carrying machine, a skip-glide flight across the top of the atmosphere could enable a London-Sydney journey in as little as four hours.
The British-designed Skylon is the brainchild of engineer Alan Bond, reports Mat Irvine. Bond heads his own space business, Reaction Engines, and now it may not be too many years before the single-stage-to-orbit aerospaceplane soars into orbit. Until then we can dream on with this Herpa 1:250 scale model kit.

Alan Bond (above) in times past has worked for aerospace companies BAC and Rolls-Royce, but now designs with his own company, Reaction Engines Ltd, to develop ideas for high-tech spacecraft. He wants to build something that can take off from a runway, travel into orbit, then return to a runway landing, like the now-retired Space Shuttle. But unlike the only partially-reusable Shuttle, Bond’s Skylon should be able to do the trip without needing expensive throwaway boosters.

High-tech Sabre
To achieve this aim, Alan has designed the unique Sabre engine (above), which combines jet and rocket propulsion, so that the same engine can be used for flight in the atmosphere and in space. As planned, the Skylon will have a pair of Sabres, mounted one at each wingtip.

Herpa model
And now you can get a model of the Skylon. Made by Herpa, it is to 1:250 scale and can - just about - be classed as a kit, as you have to attach the wings to the fuselage, then join together two components to assemble the stand. Even to 1:250 scale, the finished model Skylon isn’t exactly small - from nose to tail, the model measures some 340 mm (13.3 in) long.

Scale issue
It’s a pity the model isn’t to a popular standard scale, but as it’s of such an unusual subject - one that’s not even built yet - it’s both a surprise and a pleasure to see it in model form at all, and here’s to Herpa for bringing the Skylon model to market.

BIS direct
The model is available direct from the website of the renowned British Interplanetary Society, of which Alan is a Fellow, and one of the speakers (above) at a recent ‘space day’ entitled From Imagination To Reality. This was held at the BIS London HQ in mid-September, where, as well as discussing Skylon, Alan also waxed lyrical on one of his strongest early influences.

Pilot of the Future
That influence is one that Alan maintains started him on the path to Skylon: it was the space hero Dan Dare of the Eagle, a mega-successful weekly comic that fired the imaginations of millions of boys in the 1950s and 1960s. Above, Alan holds a 1:6 scale figure of Dan Dare, dressed smartly in Space Fleet green, as visualised by Frank Hampson for the Eagle, first issue April 14, 1950.

18. GATE, SPRUE AND RUNNER: BASIC GUIDE TO WHAT MAKES A PLASTIC KIT

During a chat with a group of model makers recently, it seemed there was some confusion as to what the items that components arrive on are called. So, an explanation…

In injection-moulded plastic kits, a sprue is the passage through which a hot, liquid material - typically polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride - flows into a precision ‘female’ mould, where it solidifies as it cools, to form detailed components that exactly match the shape, contour and detail within the mould.

Once released from the mould, sprue also refers to the actual ‘male’ item, a tube of solid plastic carrying various parts, typically forming a framework or tree, carrying various kit components.

The framework has three elements - gate, sprue, and runner.

A gate is the location at which molten plastic is injected into the mould cavity. You often see it as a small nub or projection - the ‘gate mark’ - at one end of each moulded sprue.

A sprue is the tubular channel through which molten plastic flows, along straight lines and around precisely curved corners.

A runner is the smaller channel that delivers plastic from its parent sprue to an individual part.

The sprue-and-runner system is similar to a mains water supply, where the main underground pipe (the sprue) runs along the street, with smaller pipes (runners) leading to individual buildings.

Most model kits are made from plastic - typically polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride - and it’s usually good practise to detach parts from their runners with a craft knife, razor saw, or other specialist tool, to avoid damaging components, especially small ones.

Once the components have been detached, left-over sprues can come in very handy as source material to heat and stretch, thus making spare parts such as antennas or railings.
19. DALEKS RULE: SCALE MODEL SCI-FI TAKES COMMAND IN AN ENGLISH VILLAGE

20. SMALLSPACE MODEL SHOW GOES BALLISTIC: SUCCESSFUL SECOND MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

The second smallspace show - featuring space, science fiction and fantasy models - was a wild success.

On July 7, the venue was so full that even the entry lobby was pressed into service for an art display.

Jamie Anderson, son of Gerry Anderson (Captain Scarlet, Stingray, Thunderbirds et al) was one of the special guests (below right). To commemorate Gerry’s life and times (he died in December 2012) members of the All Sections Alpha (ASA) group set up a whole section of Moon Base Alpha in the smaller smallspace hall. ASA recreates both models and full-size sets from the Anderson TV series, Space 1999.

A large Eagle Transporter (header pic) dominated the ASA model display. The closeup (below) shows some of the details, such as work on one of the rocket engines.

The other special guest was Mike Tucker, originally a BBC Visual Effects Department expert, who now runs his own VFX company called The Model Unit. Mike (right below) has recently been working on a new Doctor Who series

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, and to celebrate this at smallspace, Daleks and Cybermen roamed outside the exhibition, accompanied by the robot dog K-9 (below) rolling along under the watchful eye (and radio-control guidance) of smallspace co-organiser, Mat Irvine (right).

21. INCOMING: HARD-CHARGING 1:43 SCALE CORGI DIECAST LOTUS PERFORMANCE CAR RANGE

With Team Lotus currently standing third in the Formula One Driver’s World Championship, it’s an appropriate time for Corgi to start a collection of Lotus sports and racing cars.

Corgi presents the Lotus Team collection, a series of 1:43 scale diecast model cars. Each model carries an authentic Lotus livery and comes complete with a collector card with info details, all packed in a neat plastic case.

At present the collection includes Lotus F1 cars from the 2012 and 2013 seasons, plus the Lotus Evora road car. There are several colour schemes for this - the one shown here echoes the red-gold-white Gold Leaf Team Lotus markings used in the late 1960s.

For more than 60 years, British car manufacturer Lotus has been designing and building leading edge sports and racing cars, the first of which was built in 1948, in North London by founder Colin Chapman.

A founding Chapman principle was ‘performance through light weight’, and Lotus continues this aim from its design and build HQ, based on a former World War II air base in Norfolk, UK.

22. INCOMING: SMALLSPACE 2013 - SPACE, SCIENCE-FICTION AND FANTASY MODEL SHOW

The second annual SMALLSPACE event is coming this Sunday, July 7. This year the show has a twin focus - on the late Gerry Anderson of THUNDERBIRDS fame, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the BBC TV series DOCTOR WHO.

Here are some info-blasts from the SMALLSPACE website...

Jamie, son of Gerry:

Jamie is the son of Gerry Anderson. He is a director of the company his father set up,Anderson Entertainment, to look at the development of potential new productions.smallspace 2 also includes many displays of expertly re-created, and some original, models and figures from many of the Gerry Anderson series.

Mike Tucker, special-effects master and author:

Mike was a long-time member of the BBC Visual Effects Department. As part of that he was involved with what is now termed 'Classic Doctor Who', in the Sylvester McCoy era. He has also worked on 'New Who', so he is one of the very few to have experience in both environments. He runs The Model Unit for specialist miniature FX work. He is also a novelist of Who, Merlin, and his own, stories, and produces fine art prints.

Doctor Who's arch-enemies:

Daleks will be present - again intent in taking over Hanslope.

23. MORE SUPER-SIZE MODELS: DOWN ON THE FARM WITH 1:16 SCALE TRACTORS

Mat Irvine: Here’s an interesting selection of farm machinery, on sale via the UK-based distributor, Accurate Diecast.

Among the models that caught my eye at the London Toy Fair earlier this year were a number of 1:16 scale tractors. My star miniature on the Accurate Diecast stand was the ungainly twin-engine ‘Double Drive’ tractor (below) based on the Ferguson TE20, produced from 1946-56. The resulting model is a substantial, if weird-looking miniature that measures 280mm (11in) long.

There is a historical kit connection here, for the Ferguson TE20 was the original ‘Little Grey Fergie’, immortalised as the first-ever kit made by Airfix, in 1949.

Another interesting 1:16 scale range appeared to be - at first glance - Meccano kits, but are actually made by Tronico, a German company that produces a wide range of farm machinery to this scale. These kits can be extremely complex - for example, the Tronico Massey-Ferguson tractor (below) has an epic 1024 parts to assemble.

Although 1:16 scale is fairly unusual today, it could be said to have kick-started the whole idea of model car scales. The first Revell car kit, based on the Gowland and Gowland Ford Model T toy, was made to this standard engineering scale. There's an SMN article on it here.

The diecast Case tractor (below) is a neat model, though as a diorama-ready scale replica, it's crying out for some weathering and highlighted details.

The Tronico box (below) is a workmanlike design, but provides the information a buyer needs.

24. STRUCTURAL MODEL KITS - IS THE HASEGAWA 1:16 SCALE SOPWITH CAMEL THE START OF SOMETHING BIG?

News of the 1:16 scale Hasegawa Sopwith Camel makes us wonder if ultra-large scales are on the growth list for future scale models.

We'd like to see the Camel's 1:16 scale matched by a reduced-size version of Hasegawa excellent old-timers, the 1:8 scale Fokker Triplane. Together with the 1:16 scale Wright Flyer, they'd make a fine trio, and (here's a wish list) could perhaps be matched by versions with non-see-through construction. There are 1:8 scale engine kits that could also be reduced in parallel, as part of an expanding range.

Figures have long been a Hasegawa strength in smaller scales, so now's the time to see a bunch of 1:16 pilots and personnel.

Hasegawa is not the only player in the 1:16 game. World War II fans could spend a lot more money and have a go at the Mitsubishi Zero partwork project from the publisher DeAgostini.

There are some period cars available to 1:16 scale too, very useful if you like dioramas. The 'Tin Lizzie' Model T Ford is a universal choice for historical settings, as its manufacture ran from 1908-1927, which means that it can be relevant for more or less any period setting right up to the late 1930s. There's a neat 1912 Model T kit from Academy (see eBay link above) that could fit the bill nicely.

As for customising options, the Model T can be presented in a near-infinite number of suitable guises, from civilian car to military pickup or fuel truck. Just decide what you want to do and get out the tools!

The only real drawback to 1:16 scale is the sheer size of the assembled models, and thus the space needed to display them well. But if that means concentrating on fewer subjects, while putting in more time into each one, maybe that's no bad thing.

25. INCOMING: FASCINATING 'SEE-INSIDE' HASEGAWA 1:16 SCALE SOPWITH CAMEL FIGHTER KIT

SMN report: Due shortly in stores worldwide is this 1:16 scale Hasegawa ‘Museum Quality’ structural kit of the Sopwith Camel F1, an iconic single-seat World War I fighter plane.

The original 1:8 Sopwith Camel mega-kit has been lurking in Hasegawa’s back catalog for many years, so it’s a real pleasure to see that the subject has been revamped for 2013, and will shortly be available for World War I fans. It’s good also to see some competition for Wingnut Wings in this area, albeit to 1:16 scale, twice the size of Wingnut aircraft.

This see-inside ‘structural’ model kit has a total of 293 components in the box, so there’s plenty to assemble, though at 1:16 scale, even the smallest parts are relatively easy to handle.

Hasegawa promo pix reveal a wealth of detail, though perhaps they could have given the fuel tank (below) a bit more care. Its central seam is quite noticeable, and you’ll have to give it a thorough fill-and-smooth job. Other details are much better, such as the highly convincing wicker pilot's seat.

The engine cowlings deserve mention, as these components have been plated with a realistic, not too shiny, metallic finish. An excellent touch, as are the convincing tyres and delightful rotary engine. It’s worth pointing out that the Camel is not a multi-material kit, albeit the tyres are moulded in a rubber-like material.

One area which could defeat the hands (aka skills) of this model maker is the rigging. At least this Camel is not to the comparatively tiny 1:72 scale, and neither was the machine the most heavily-rigged World War I aircraft. Even so, I can see that it’s going to need an extremely dextrous job to rig the Hasegawa kit effectively - so here’s crossing fingers (perhaps not!) that I can make it so.

About the real thing
The Sopwith Camel was a British World War I single-seat biplane fighter, first introduced to combat operations in 1917, on the Western Front. It had a comparatively short fuselage, a powerful rotary engine, and twin synchronized machine guns.

Most trainee pilots at first found the little biplane difficult to handle, but in experienced hands it was an agile and manoeuvrable fighting machine. By the end of World War I flyers in Sopwith Camels had been credited with shooting down 1294 enemy aircraft, more than in any other Allied fighter. The restored Camel below is presently with the National Museum of the US Air Force, near Dayton, Ohio.

Summation
The 1:16 scale Hasegawa Sopwith Camel is a detailed kit that compares very well to other scale models of the World War I era. It will make an impressive display piece if assembled well.

HASEGAWA SOPWITH CAMEL SCALE STATS

1. Roden 1/48 Heinkel He51 B.1 (452) - 2015-12-20 20:50:00

New biplane from Ukrainian manufacturer
This review covers new plastic kit from Roden. As you can see on the main photo, this is German biplane He51, which is molded in 1/48 scale. In a nice average-sized box, modeler can find 5 grey plastic sprues, one transparent, decals sheet, and assembly manual. Let's open the box and check everything closer.

The first plastic frame carries wing parts only. Both top and bottom wings are molded as one-piece elements with ribbed surface.

Note that top wing has separately molded ailerons. Attachment points are placed in well-thought positions.

Next, we have two small grey plastic frames. Here Roden placed parts both for internal and external detalization. Tailwings are molded as one-piece elements with separate elevators.

Unfortunately, wheels should be assembled from two halves, so you have to be ready to work on seams between them. By the way, rudder is also molded separately from tail segment.

Fuselage halves are placed on the separate plastic sprue. As you can see on the photo, those are combined with tail segment.

Inside there is almost no detalization. Top cowling part is molded as separate element, so at least in this area you won't have seams. Propeller is molded as one-piece part, the only question might be related to attachment points, which are placed on the blades.

The last plastic sprue is full of internal and external elements. Front cowling part is molded as separate part. Exhaust stacks are also provided in a "grouped" form.

Transparent sprue is not big in size and contains only several parts. Molding quality is good, and you will definitely need masks for those.

Decals sheet is not big, but contains all necessary symbols for two marking options. Printing quality is good, and I hope that application won't be problematic either.

Two featured marking options are printed on one of the box sides, as you can see on the photo above.

Assembly manual is finished in the form of small black-and-white brochure with short history note on the first page.

Next comes parts map and assembly process starts.

All steps are explained with the help of schematic images.

Marking options are shown on the last pages of the manual. Unfortunately, both are printed in black-and-white.

He51 is obviously not a "mainstream" aircraft that you can see on the exhibitions, but maybe the situation can change with today's model. In this nice box, modeler gets nice plastic, which can assemble into realistic biplane. Of course, some experience would be required because of the biplane construction. I have no doubt that very soon aftermarket manufacturers will introduce new PE and resin sets for this kit transforming it into something even better. As usual, you can find this kit on official Roden website.Don't forget to like our Facebook page, so that you can get fresh articles on time.
+++Pros++++Excellent molding quality+Clever parts division+Nice decals
---Cons----No masks and PE-Black-and-white marking guide
