For the past couple of years, we have shared with you our film-picks for the coming year, and 2019 is no different. We’ve a list of five military history-related films that are currently set for release this year that you may not have head of, and are definitely worth keeping an eye-out for.
Directed by Aaron Schneider
Starring: Tom Hanks
During the early days of World War II, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by Commander Ernest Krause, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while being hotly pursued by wolf packs of German U-boats. The film focuses on Krause, a career officer who was finally given command of a Navy destroyer Greyhound. Unlike the prototypical hero, he must battle his own self-doubts and personal demons to prove he belongs alongside the conflict with the enemy.
Aaron Schneider won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Two Soldiers, and with Oscar-winner Tom Hanks in the leading role, this sounds like a winning combination to me. Hanks is also reported to have also written the screenplay, which is an adaptation of The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester. Filming took place on USS Kidd last year.
Wolf Hound (2019)
Directed by Michael B. Chait
Starring Trevor Donovan, James Maslow
Based on the real-life Nazi program KG 200, Wolf Hound chronicles the story of a Jewish-American pilot shot down behind enemy lines. With little more than his wits and a sidearm, he must outsmart a brilliant enemy, rescue his captured crew, and foil a plot that could change the course of the war.
Director Michael B. Chait has recently announced his next project War Birds, and has already directed the short film B-52: Three Generations, so his passion for aviation history and filmmaking is abundantly clear. Wolf Hound definitely has potential to be a fast-paced and exciting story.
Directed by Sam Mendes
In one of the most significant moments of the War in 1917, the US announce the break in official relations
with Germany ahead of entering the war in April.
Stephen Spielberg’s production company are producing Sam Mendes’s new project, which is currently set for a December 2019 release. Whilst plot details haven’t been fully revealed, it sounds as if this is set to be another World War I-themed blockbuster.
Directed by Justin Kurzel
Starring: Margot Robbie, Matthias Schoenaerts
The film follows a nameless ex-Nazi captain who navigates the ruins of post-World War II Germany determined to atone for his crimes during the war by hunting down the surviving members of his former SS Death Squad.
Ruin certainly sounds like it’s going to take a lot of artistic license when it comes to World War II, but with Margot Robbie and the director behind 2015’s Macbeth, it's one that has caught my attention. We'll have to wait for the trailer.
Directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz
Starring Ed Harris, Clémence Poésy, Jesse Eisenberg
The story of a group of Jewish Boy Scouts who worked with the French Resistance to save the lives of ten thousand orphans during World War II.
This film was announced a couple of years ago, but is now scheduled to hit screens in 2019. Resitance ollows Eisenberg as real-life mime artist Marcel Marceau, who in his youth lived in hiding and worked with the French Resistance. His work saved numerous children from concentration camps, helping them out of France and into neutral Switzerland. Matthias Schweighöfe is set play SS commander and ‘Butcher of Lyon’ Klaus Barbie, who was awarded the Iron Cross First Class by Hitler for his campaign against the French Resistance.
In this blog, Michael Leck looks at the different conflicts you can bring to your tabletop with Rebels and Patriots, the upcoming wargame he has written with Daniel Mersey. This blog is adapted from one originally found on Michael's personal blog.
British Loyalist Skirmishers from the American War of Independence. Miniatures painted by my mate Jesper.
One of the most common questions I get regarding Rebels and Patriots is:
Can I use the Rebels and Patriots rules for this conflict...
The answer to that question is:
Yes you can!
...at least with a minimum of adjustments, if any at all.
Swedish Light Cavalry charged by Russian Hussars fielded as Shock Cavalry, Finnish War 1808-09
Rebels and Patriots is written with a focus on North American conflicts from the Seven Year War until the American Civil War and a little bit futher, and we have included more than 40 example army lists for 13 different North American conflicts: French and Indian War (1754–63) American War of Independence (1775–83) Northwest Indian War (1785–95) Mexican War of Independence (1810–21) War of 1812 (1812–15) Texas Revolution (1835–36) Canada Patriots Rebellion (1837–38) Mexican–American War (1846–48) Cortina War (1859–60, 1861) American Civil War (1861–65) The Mexican Adventure, French intervention in Mexico (1861–67) Fenian Raids (1866–71) What-if: British Intervention Force in North America (1860s)
British Highlanders fielded as Shock Infantry during the American War of Independence. Miiatures painted by Jesper.
With these army lists as a base, it should not be a problem for you to make your own army lists for any conflicts raging across the globe during this period of history. In short – yes, you can use Rebels and Patriots for other conflicts!
Swedish Line Infantry in Close Order fielded as two units of Line Infantry, Finnish War 1808-09
For example, you can use the Rebels and Patriots rules for the Finnish War 1808-09 as I do, using the latest Perry Miniature range of Napoleonic Swedes.

I’ve even put together a 24-point Peninsular War list for you to use if you wish!
Sharpe’s Rifles – 1809-12 Officer Richard Sharp, Trait: Heroic Leader (1 mini) 1 unit of Veteran Skirmishers that are Sharpshoters - Chosen men of the 95th rifles (5 minis + Officer). 2 units of Light Infantry - Captain Fredrickson and 60th rifles (2x12 minis) 1 unit of Mounted Skirmishers - Teresa Moreno´s Spanish guerrilla (6 minis, most on foot and a few mounted or horseholders)
As it happens, Brigade Games have an extensive Napoleonic Range with a bunch of miniatures that closely resemble the characters in the Sharpe series, all sculpted by the talented Paul Hicks.

Сделката за продажбата на 12 употребявани изтребители F-16C/D Barak между Израел и Хърватско е изправена пред фактическия си провал, а причината за това е отказ на САЩ да дадат разрешение за нея.
Michael Leck is back on the blog to look in a little more depth at an interesting rule that can be found in Rebels and Patriots, the wargaming rules for North America written by Michael Leck and Daniel Mersey. This blog was originally published on Michael's personal blog, which can be found here!
For this blog I wanted to give an in-depth description of a rule in the upcoming Rebels and Patriots rules that goes a little outside the comfortable ‘Rampant’ box – random charge move distances.
So what is all the fuss about and why?
It actually started with all Cavalry units being shot to pieces during the playtest games. Cavalry are, and should be, fragile to firing as well as Infantry in the open BUT at least the Cavalry should have a chance to reach an enemy before the unit was all gone (at least for the sake of playability of the rules!)
The solution to this challenge was to introduce a longer but random charge move, giving the charging unit a chance of closing before they were taken out, but also putting them at risk of falling short and ending up in the open if they failed to gain enough momentum in their charge.
When your unit wants to charge an enemy it has to be within Maximum Attack Distance – 12” for Infantry and 18” for Cavalry.
So, we assume your unit is within Maximum Attack Distance, then you roll to Activate the unit, succeeding as usual with a 6+.
If you succeeded with the Activation, the unmodified dice roll is the distance your unit must move towards the target of the attack. All Cavalry units add an additional 6” to the dice roll. The attacking unit must move the full distance even if it won’t bring it in contact with the target unit. Remember to honour the 3” rule for proximity to enemy units if the attack doesn’t make it into contact.
With this simple solution a unit has the chance to be able to perform a charge before taking too many casualties, but still faces a great risk by exposing themselves to enemy fire.
The enemy must also be wary of being charged before they eliminate the threat, as they can’t be sure when the enemy will commit to the attack. Will they take a chance and Attack from further away with the risk of being caught in the open, or will they try to play it safe and move into position for a shorter Charge distance.
This also effects the triangular metaplay between Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery. Cavalry are now a greater threat to Infantry, who in response form-up in Close Order for better protection, but are then more vulnerable to Artillery fire.
Here is an example of the random charge move:
An infantry unit wants to Attack an enemy unit that is 7" from them. The unit rolls 5 on the Activation Test and remains stationary as they failed the test (they need 6+ to Activate). If the Attacking unit had their Officer within 12", giving +1 on all Activation rolls, they would have succeeded with their Activation and moved 5" (the unmodified number rolled on the Activation dice) towards the enemy, but they would not be able to make contact as they started 7" away. Instead, the Attacking unit has to stop 3" from the enemy and no melee will occur.
If the Attacking unit was a unit of Light Cavalry, they would still fail to activate on the roll of a 5, but with the Officer close by they would have gained their vital +1, totalling 6 and succeeding – thereby moving 5" + 6" (Cavalry add +6"), a total of 11" which would have galloped them into contact with the enemy 7" away.
If the unit being charged was another Light Cavalry unit that chose, and succeeded, to Evade, it would then make a half move (6" for Light Cavalry) as a response to the Attack. Meaning that the unit would be 13" away from the Attacking unit before the Attacking unit moved. The Attacking unit would only make a move of 11" – not enough to contact the target, so the charging Light Cavalry would stop 3" short.
I hope you will like the new charge concept and that it will help make your battles with the Rebels and Patriots rules as interesting as possible!
Below are some more photographs of a successful British charge painted by my friend Jesper.

Warships of the Republic of Venice
For centuries, Venice was the Mediterranean naval superpower. In its great state-owned shipyard, the Venetian Arsenal, it developed efficient, production-line techniques of building galleys, allowing it to outbuild its rivals and replace combat losses rapidly. Its tradition was to man its galleys with highly-motivated paid oarsmen rather than slaves. During the Middle Ages it already maintained a standing navy, and with this, dominated the Adriatic and stretched its maritime trade links across the Mediterranean. Later, Venice developed the first ships with broadside cannon armament, its galleasses, whose victorious debut was at the Battle of Lepanto. By the 17th and 18th centuries, Venetian naval power diminished, despite adopting sailing galleons alongside the traditional rowed warships, and in 1797 the Napoleonic invasion brought the glorious reign of Venice and its navy to an end.
Combat Airboats 1915–2015
The first airboat was a military craft, built in 1915 by the British in Iraq using the engine and propeller from a wrecked Farman biplane, and it operated on the Tigris. Over the next century, armed airboats were found to be ideal in theatres where their speed and super-shallow draught were invaluable. Airboats and aerosleds (the snowborne equivalent) were used extensively by the Soviets on the Eastern Front. The Americans in Vietnam found the Mekong Delta to be perfect airboat territory, especially for special operations forces – their Aircats could go places no other boat could, and be helicoptered into remote, hostile territory. In the early 20th century airboats were back in action where they first operated – in the rivers and marshes of Iraq.
Warships of the Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Navy of 1936 was a significant force, with cruisers, destroyers, and a handful of dreadnought battleships. While the officers tended to sympathise with Franco and the Nationalists, its men tended towards the Republicans. The result was mutinies and defections, and a navy that, like Spain itself, split into two. The Nationalists’ fleet was much smaller, but they were more effective fighting units. The large, but poorly led Republican fleet was still formidable enough to prevent the Army of Africa sailing to mainland Spain, prompting the Germans to launch the world’s first military airlift. Over the next three years, the two fleets fought a war of blockade, attempting to break and reopen supply routes, with a series of surface battles between the two sides.
Polish Warships 1939-45
On the outbreak of World War II, the most valuable units of the Polish Navy were ordered to attempt an escape to Britain. Two submarines and three destroyers (including two of the modern, powerful Grom-class) made it, to continue the fight from across the North Sea. In exile, the Polish Navy received new, British-built warships, including cruisers and destroyers, which fought across the European and Atlantic naval theatres, including the destroyer ORP Piorun’s famous part in the sinking of the Bismarck.
The Modern Indian Navy
In 2013, India launched the new INS Vikrant, the first aircraft carrier designed and built in India. Vikrant joins a navy rapidly becoming a high-tech bluewater force, with amphibious warfare ships, nuclear-powered submarines, guided missile destroyers, and stealthy corvettes, and which is investing heavily in its own advanced naval technology. This book would explain the capabilities, equipment, and role of a navy whose presence and power covers some of the world’s most important maritime hotspots, from the waters of the Middle East to the Straits of Malacca, and which is a potential rival to Chinese naval power in the region.
