1. Memoirs from Osprey Publishing - 2018-12-17 16:56:00
We have been fortunate to publish an incredible range of military history memoirs since we first began our General Military and General Aviation series. Aside from being insightful and emotive, each memoir is intrinsically very personal, and each captures a unique perspective on an aspect of military history. Sharing these throughout the years has been a privilege for us, and so, we thought we'd end our 50th year by highlighting some of our recent memoirs that you may have missed.
Run to the Sound of the Guns by Nicholas Moore &
Mir Bahmanyar
Small-arms fire continues to batter the alley and the compound. I make my way out the muffled warning of ‘grenade.’ The alleyway erupts; shrapnel promises more pain and death. Moans puncture the night, moans from my guys, my assault squad, my brothers.
For nearly a decade, Nicholas Moore served with the US Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment at the leading edge of America’s War on Terrorism. He served in Afghanistan and Iraq, participated in the rescue of Private First Class Jessica Lynch, and experienced brutal street combat. Run to the Sound of the Guns is the compelling and deeply personal account of a husband and father who nearly lost his life ‘leading the way’ in America’s secretive global wars

Snapdragon by Liesl Bradner
Our training period is about over. We’re ready for something big. It’s not official and Colonel Darby hasn’t taken me into his confidence to let me know the lowdown. But we all know it, feel it. There’s something in the air. Even the Arzew sand dunes sort of whisper it. It’s a hard thing to explain. Maybe it’s because a military group develops a sensitivity as though we are molded into a compact gang of guys, all the same ideas and thoughts.
Prior to Phil Stern's death in 2014, his original, unfinished, tattered wartime memoir was discovered, stashed away in an old folio box in his cluttered Hollywood bungalow. Best remembered for his iconic images of Hollywood stars, his remarkable service during World War II as a combat photographer with Darby's Rangers has remained largely unknown. Until now.
No Ordinary Pilot by Suzanne Campbell-Jones
He released the pin of his safety harness so he could get free of the aircraft. He felt the harness go. The buffeting slipstream sucked him out. Out over the cockpit and over the tail of his plane. His aircraft went on crashing downwards. He felt for the ripcord on his parachute. It opened immediately. He was swaying some 800ft above the ground.
Six months after joining the RAF, aged 19, Bob Allen was flying a Hurricane in dog fights, and was later one of the first over the Normandy beaches on D-Day.
On 25 July 1944 Bob was shot down and spent the rest of the war in a POW camp, where he was interrogated by the Gestapo and imprisoned in the infamous Stalag Luft 3 before being liberated by the Russians. No Ordinary Pilot is Bob's memoir, written by his daughter Suzanne.

The Regiment by Rusty Firmin
It took about 16 minutes to get everyone in position and ready to initiate. As soon as we reached our assault position, I reported in that Bravo One and the rest of the Bravo callsigns with me were in position and ready to go, and listening in on the net I could hear the other team leaders doing the same. Suddenly, Major G came up again: ‘Go! Go! Go!’
This was followed immediately by a huge explosion as the distraction charge was set off by Frank Collins up on the roof and the whole area seemed to rock as the blast wave rushed past
The Special Air Service (SAS) has won renown in some of the most dramatic and dangerous military special operations. In The Regiment, one of its longest-serving veterans offers a glimpse into the shadowy world of the SAS, featuring 15 years-worth of incredible combat experiences, including the assault of the Iranian Embassy in London in May 1980.
Helmand to the Himalayas by David Wiseman
I shouted over to the guy in Pashto. He couldn’t hear me over the noise of the fight, so I took aim and sent two 5.56mm rounds in his general direction. I aimed at the soft ground to the right-hand side of him. This did the trick. He experienced the sickening sensation of the sharp whip-crack that explodes in your head when rounds unexpectedly pass very close. It’s not like in the movies where people stand around unflinching when the rounds begin to fly. You have an involuntary primeval reaction: you either hit the deck or run for cover, and this guy ran like the wind.
David Wiseman was the first soldier on the scene of one of the most devastating attacks on British soldiers in Afghanistan. Only a few weeks later, David was once again fighting shoulder to shoulder with his Afghan allies, but this time would leave the battlefield with a Taliban bullet lodged inches from his heart. Helmand to the Himalayas is the dramatic story of his journey in combat, his agonising battle with physical injuries and psychological demons and his life affirming recovery as part of a pioneering mountaineering team.

The Boys of '67 by Andrew Wiest
The bullet didn’t really hurt at first. In my hand at the time I couldn’t even feel a thing. My chest gave me a funny feeling all over like you are going to die. It kind of knocked the wind out of me and my body felt numb all over. Then finally it started to hurt and breathing was a little hard, but I was so scared. The blood was running all over the ground into a little water that was there and finally the water was all red... I just had to lie there because no one could help me because the VC were shooting right over my head and I was too much in the open. So I just kept yelling for help, and they were behind cover watching me. There was nothing they could do at the time.
Unlike the vast majority of other companies in the US Army, the men of Charlie Company were a close-knit family. This is their story. From the joker who roller-skated into the Company First Sergeant's office wearing a dress, to the nerdy guy who would rather be off somewhere inventing computers, and the everyman who just wanted to keep his head down. Written by leading Vietnam expert Dr Andrew Wiest, The Boys of '67 recalls the horrors of battle through the recollections of the young men themselves.
Which of these have you read? Do you have a favourite military history memoir? We'd love to hear your picks in the comments!

2. Rebels and Patriots: The Different Troop Types - 2018-12-19 11:34:44
Michael Leck is back on the blog with a look at the different troop types in Rebels and Patriots, the upcoming wargame he has written with Daniel Mersey. This blog is adapted from one originally found on Michael's personal blog.
I guess you might want to start building your forces for the release of Rebels and Patriots, so I thought it would be a good idea to talk a little more about the different Troop Types we use in the rules.
As with other rules from the Rampant family, we use generic troop types to represent the different units you can field in your game. They certainly are generic, and you might have to think for a moment about how best to depict and represent the specific troops fielded in the conflict you are building a force for.
Most of the miniatures shown in the pictures are from my Mexican-American War 1848 force that I started up as my playtest project for Rebels and Patriots. The models are Perry American Civil War and Napoleonic, as well as Victrix Napoleonic plastic that I converted into Mexicans and Americans. The natives are from Galloping major. Now on to the troop types!

First we have the basic footsloggers that make up most forces during the major part of the period covered by Rebels and Patriots; the Line Infantry! They are most often fielded in units of 12 miniatures and they have access to the longest list of Unit upgrades of all Troop types in the game, so it will be possible for you to tailor them to create the perfect Unit for your force.
Изображение
American Line Infantry

We have also included two “specialist Line Infantry” Troop types; the Light Infantry and the Shock Infantry. They are both specialisations of the Line Infantry that we felt needed their own Troop type to best represent their special training and function. Both would usually be fielded in Units of 12 miniatures, with several Special rules that make them stand out in their own way and better represent their special tasks during a battle, but these come at a cost.

Изображение

Mexican Light Infantry

Изображение

Mexican Grenadiers as Shock Infantry
Skirmishers have always had a place on the Horse and Musket battlefield, and can also be found in the Rebels and Patriots rules. The Troop type Skirmishers can represent either trained regulars that are sent out as a picket / skirmish line whose main tasks is to protect the Line Infantry, or as Irregular Troops that harass regular troops taking potshots from cover. Either way, they are fielded in units of 6 miniatures.
Изображение
American Riflemen as Skirmishers

The last of the true Infantry Troop types are the Natives, who fight in irregular loose-order warbands that mainly focus on hit-and-run tactics, waiting until the enemy are withered down and then moving in for the final assault. If you want your Natives to hide in the forest taking well-aimed shots you might consider fielding them as Skirmishers instead. Natives are most often fielded in units of 12 miniatures.

Изображение
A Native American Warband

Even though the rules focus on small scale action where Artillery probably didn’t have any great impact, we have included the Artillery Troop type in the rules. These are subdivided into Light, Medium, and Heavy artillery and are normally fielded as 1 gun with 4 crew.
Изображение

Mexican Artillery

The last Troop types are the Cavalry. The terrain features of North America meant that Cavalry didn’t have quite the same impact on warfare as it did in Europe, so most Cavalry are represented by the Light Cavalry troop type. They are fielded in units of 6 miniatures.
Изображение
Mexican Lancers as Light Cavalry

Since the rules also include Mexico we have also provided the rules for the Shock Cavalry Troop type to better represent Light Cavalry grouped together and used in the battlefield role of European Heavy Cavalry. Shock Cavalry are normally fielded in units of 12 miniatures. The same miniatures can be fielded either as Light Cavalry or Shock Cavalry depending on how you as a commander wish to use them during the battle.

Изображение

Mexican Cuirassiers fielded as Shock Cavalry

If, for example, you are looking for the iconic American Mounted Riflemen you will find him as a unit upgrade in the Skirmish Troop type.
I hope my short introduction to the different troop types can help you as you start to draft your Rebels and Patriots forces.

Rebels and Patriots brings you the rules to recreate the battles that forged a nation, from the French and Indian War, through the War of Independence and the War of 1812, to the Alamo and the American Civil War. The game will be available from 24th January - preorder your copy today!

1. Sneak Peek at March's Artwork - 2018-12-21 11:40:00
In the final artwork reveal of 2018, we're looking at three plates featured in our March books. Do you have a favourite? Let us know in the comments.
Combat 39: Russian Soldier vs Japanese Soldier by David Campbell
Illustrated by Steve Noon

Изображение

This first image is taken from Russian Soldier vs Japanese Soldier, which delves into the conflict between the two countries over the region of Manchuria. The plate here is titled ‘Fighting to the death on 203 Metre Hill, 30 November 1904’, and depicts the Japanese’s concerted attacks at 203 Metre Hill in an attempt to target the remaining Russian ships at Port Arthur.
Weapon 67: Sniping Rifles on the Eastern Front 1939–45 by Martin Pegler
Illustrated by Alan Gilliand, Johnny Shumate

Изображение

This next image is from Sniping Rifles on the Eastern Front 1939–45 and depicts a Finnish sniper targeting two nearby Germans during the Lapland War. the two Germans have prepared a position from which to use a captured Soviet PTRD-41 antitank rifle as a sniping weapon. The second German has his Gew 43 rifle with Zf 4 scope resting on the edge of the foxhole next to him and looks through binoculars for enemy activity.
Campaign 33: The Aleutians 1942–43 by Brian Lane Herder
Illustrated by Dorothy Hwee

Изображение

This final plate is a dramatic scene from The Aleutians 1942–43, depicting the climax off the Komandorski Islands on 26 March 1943. Here, the heavy cruiser Nachi is turning hard to starboard, away from the Americans. Nachi is bracketed by Salt Lake City’s unexpected (and undyed) high-explosive rounds, which appear to be dropped from high overhead by unseen US bombers. The effect is convincing enough that Nachi’s antiaircraft guns begin firing through the low overcast, a spectacle recorded by the Americans.

Awe-inspiring Artwork
It's so hard every month to pick out just three pieces of artwork from all of those publishing, so picking out the best of them was a real challenge - but we've had a go nonetheless. Which is your favourite?

WPN 64: The Luger
by Neil Grant Illustrated by Johnny Shumate
In a dramatic scene from the Eastern Front in 1914, this plate shows the famous Luger in action as a German cavalryman fires at his Russian enemy, preventing him from getting within sword reach. XPL 9: Dornier Do 335
by Robert Forsyth Illustrated by Wiek Luijken
The menacing form of a long-range Junkers Ju 635 maritime reconnaissance aircraft of FAGr.5 looming about the U-Boat ‘pack’ beneath it during a rendezvous prior to a devesting strike on Allied convoys.

RAID 50: Heroes of Telemark
By David Greentree Illustrated by Peter Dennis
The wreckage of a Horsa Mk I teeters on the slopes of a remote area called Fylgjesdalen – of the 17 men on board the aircraft, only nine survived. The plane was sent to destroy the electrolysis plant at Vemork as part of a Norwegian-led SOE raid that prevented Hitler from building an atomic bomb. ELI 226: Division Leclerc
by Merlin Robinson, Thomas Seignon Illustrated by Raffaeke Ruggeri
In this colourful illustration from Raffaele Ruggeri, M4A2 Sherman Romilly has halted in the heart of Paris at an FFI barricade on August 24th. Adjudant Henri Caron can be seen in the centre, having dismounted to converse with Capitaine Raymond Dronne.

What people said about our books:
American Knights
‘This is a truly epic book, one of the best military books I have read in recent years’ – Classic Military Vehicle
HMS Belfast Pocket Manual
‘Stuffed full of detail and can be easily dipped into for fascinating facts or insights into what it was really like to serve aboard the famous HMS Belfast’ – Warships International Fleet Review
Legion versus Phalanx
‘What does [Myke Cole] bring to the text we might not expect elsewhere? It is, thankfully, what he knows best, and can imagine, as a result of his own experience—what it must mean to be serving in a phalanx, and how this differs from the experience of a legionary’ – Classics for All
Soviet T-54 Main Battle Tank
‘If you’re remotely interested in the T-54, just like Russian armour anyway, or you just have an interest historically in the period, then I would hugely recommend this title to you […] this is an absolutely excellent title, definitely a must-have as far as armour modellers are concerned, and so it comes heartily recommended by me’ – Scale Modelling Now Video Review

In a gripping extract from new Raid title Blackbeard’s Last Fight, Angus Konstam recounts the moment Edward Teach, better know as Blackbeard, made the fatal miscalculation that would cost him his life.
