1. Osprey's World Tour - Ireland - 2015-11-28 08:21:00
Osprey's World Tour sees us delving into our extensive backlist of books as we explore the globe through military history.
Today Osprey's World Tour has taken us to Ireland, with a stunning piece of artwork offering a glimpse into the nation's military history. The scene below is taken from Campaign 180: Easter Rising 1916 and shows the occupation of the General Post Office on Sackville Street.

Изображение

The ‘lancers’ in Sackville Street, 24 April 1916.
Extract from Campaign 180: Easter Rising 1916 by Michael McNally

Almost as soon as they had occupied the General Post Office, the Rebels began to fortify the building using whatever materials came to hand – furniture, postal sacks, ledgers – any thing that would serve to block a window or provide a modicum of cover. As news of the Rising spread, a detachment of the 6th Reserve Cavalry Regiment, under Col. Hammond, was sent from the Marlborough Barracks, near Phoenix Park, to investigate and report upon the situation in Sackville Street.
Unsure of the situation, Hammond halted his command at the Parnell Memorial at the northern end of Sackville Street, and sent forward a small patrol to secure the information required. As the troopers passed the Nelson Pillar, many of the insurgents within the Post Office abandoned their attempts at building breastworks and armed with an eclectic mix of firearms, rushed to the windows to be amongst the first to strike a blow against the enemy. On the ground floor of the GPO, James Connolly, moved amongst the men encouraging them and cautioning them to await the orders to fire, being joined by Capt. Michael Collins, one of Joseph Plunkett's aides, who had come to the front of the building in order to observe and report on developments. As part of a training formation, the cavalrymen included recruits from four units, the 5th and 12th Lancers and two regiments of London Yeomanry. Contrary to many reports only a number of the men were actually armed with lances.
Despite Connolly's exhortations, many of his men – as well as those in the buildings opposite – fired early and the intended crossfire was not as effective as had been hoped with three troopers being killed and a fourth dismounted when his horse was shot from under him. Another British casualty was narrowly averted when a round fired from the positions across from the GPO, splintered the telephone booth in which Lt. Chalmers was being held prisoner. First blood had indeed been struck, but it was a double-edged sword. The British were now painfully aware that Sackville Street was being held in strength by the enemy and, until the situation became clearer, were more inclined to err on the side of caution whilst amongst the GPO garrison – and Connolly especially – there developed a belief that it would only be a matter of time before the British ordered a frontal assault upon the GPO, which would be bloodily repulsed by the defenders. This misconception on Connolly's part persisted throughout the week, only to remain unrealised when the burning building was finally evacuated late on the evening of Friday 28 April, although – ironically – the British had indeed planned to assault the GPO during the Saturday morning, but cancelled their plans when the building was found to be unoccupied.

1. Sunday Photo - The Third Anglo-Burmese War - 2015-11-29 08:41:00
On 29 November 1885 the Third Anglo-Burmese War came to an end, with King Thipaw, the last of the Konbaung dynasty monarchs, deposed and his family sent into exile. As a result of this short conflict the whole of Burma fell under the rule of the British Raj as a province of India, a state it would remain in until the 1930s.
The photograph below shows the nominal surrender of the Burmese Army on the 27 November, 1885.

1. The Life of Winston Churchill - 2015-11-30 08:10:14
On 30 November 1874 Winston Churchill, one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century, was born. In honour of this great man we have put together a timeline. For a complete guide to his life head to Churchill Central, an online resource packed with quotes, photographs and information on one of the most famous Britons of all time.

Churchill the Schoolboy
Изображение

"How I hated this school, and what a life of anxiety I lived there for more than two years."
Churchill, My Early Life
Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire on St Andrew’s Day, 30 November 1874. This was the home of his grandfather, the seventh Duke of Marlborough. On his father’s side he was a child of the aristocracy; his father was the Conservative politician, Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill. His mother was the American-born beauty, Jennie Jerome, daughter of a stockbroker, financier and newspaper proprietor. They were a glamorous high society couple but distant parents.
Churchill was brought up by his nanny, Mrs Everest, with his younger brother, Jack, and was sent away to boarding schools in Ascot and Brighton before going to Harrow School. He was a wilful and rebellious child, who clashed with school discipline, and who was not thought clever enough to go to university. He only passed the entrance exam for the officer training school at Sandhurst on his third attempt.

Churchill the Soldier
Изображение

"There is no doubt the charge was an awful gamble and that no normal precautions were possible. The issue as far as I was concerned had to be left to Fortune or to God – or to whatever may decide these things. I am content and shall not complain."
Churchill, in a letter to his mother, 17 September 1898
The death of Lord Randolph Churchill on 24 January 1895, aged just forty five, and before Churchill had been able to prove himself to his father, clearly had a profound effect. Churchill became a cavalry officer in the 4th (Queen’s Own) Hussars only a month later but almost from the beginning his mind was set on following his father into politics. To do this he needed fame and fortune. In the five years between 1895 and 1900 he sought them both by getting himself transferred to as many dangerous places as possible and then writing up his experiences as newspaper articles and books. He was shot at in Cuba, fought in what is now Pakistan, on the Afghan border, survived a cavalry charge in the Sudan, and made the headlines by escaping from Boer captivity in South Africa.

Churchill the Politician
Изображение

"The present war has revised all military theories about the field of fire … The question to be solved … is the actual getting across of 100 or 200 yards of open space and wire entanglements."
Churchill in a letter to Asquith, 5 January 1915
Churchill was first elected to Parliament as a Conservative for the town of Oldham in 1900. He was only twenty-five and Queen Victoria was still on the throne. He quickly made a name for himself as a controversial politician and in 1904 he joined the Liberal Party. His early career was a mix of radicalism and reaction. He helped introduce labour exchanges and early unemployment insurance, but he also opposed strikers and refused to support votes for women. He held a succession of senior Government roles. When the First World War broke out he was the Minister in charge of the Navy, but fell from office dramatically over his leadership of the disastrous Dardanelles campaign. A short spell commanding a battalion in the trenches was followed by a return to high office and, in 1924, by a return to the Conservative Party as Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was clearly talented but many mistrusted him.

Churchill the War Leader
Изображение

"I felt as if I were walking with Destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial."
Churchill, The Second World War
Churchill became Prime Minister of a national government on 10 May 1940, the very day that Hitler invaded France and the Low Countries. The first few weeks of his premiership were marked by military disaster, as France surrendered and the British army was evacuated from Dunkirk. The United Kingdom then faced direct attack in the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. Churchill’s famous speeches and broadcasts were carefully constructed to raise British morale, while sending a message of defiance to Germany and a call for support to the United States. Churchill’s policy was ‘victory at all costs’ through ‘blood, toil, tears and sweat’. Though sixty five in 1940, he strove to take the offensive to the enemy and worked tirelessly to assemble and maintain the Grand Alliance against fascism. With his bulldog scowl, ever-present cigar and V for victory salute he came to personify the British war effort.

1. Heinz Guderian and the birth of the Panzerwaffe - 2015-12-02 08:13:12
Tanks were central to the German conquest of Europe in the early years of World War II, yet only a few decades before they had been left far behind by the pioneering tank corps of France and the UK. In this, the first of two blog posts featuring Osprey’s exciting upcoming title The History of the Panzerwaffe, Volume 1: 1939-42, we look at how Germany began to build their legendary armoured war machine.
Extract from The History of the Panzerwaffe, Volume 1: 1939-42 by Thomas Anderson
Heinz Guderian has always been seen as the ‘father’ of the German tank force. He was born in 1888, and served in a front-line signals battalion during World War I.
After the war he was selected for service in the Reichswehr and served briefly in Prussia, where he fought against Soviet forces menacing the fragile situation in the Baltic. After some years as an instructor at a military school in Stettin, he transferred to the motorized troops. This was an awakening for the ageing officer who maintained a youthful attitude to life. Guderian, who always showed a great interest in sophisticated technology and new tactics, finally had the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the transformation of the Reichswehr into a modern army.
After the long years of comparatively easy tasks, this was a true challenge. His experiences in World War I had left the impression that due to the enormous firepower of modern artillery, conventional offensive operations would not be feasible in any future conflict. Conversely, he was certain that only the tank would be the decisive weapon on any future battlefield. However, Guderian also realized that this would apply only under very special conditions. He demanded speed for a successful breakthrough operation and the concentration of his attacking forces against a specific target to shatter the defensive lines of the enemy.

The fast-moving armoured forces should then exploit this local success and fan out to enlarge the gap. By employing and developing these theories Guderian and a number of his staff officers began to elaborate tactics for the future, but at that time, a hypothetical German tank force.
Guderian wrote in his book:
“In 1929, I was finally convinced that Panzers could never play a decisive role if they are closely deployed with the infantry. My studies in military history, the evaluation of the large exercises in Great Britain and our own experiences with dummy tanks persuaded me that Panzers can exploit their extraordinary performance only if all associated support weapons, on whose assistance the Panzer relied, would be able to follow. Both speed and cross-country mobility of the respective forces have to be on a similar level. The Panzer must lead all other forces have to follow.
"We must not deploy Panzer within infantry divisions, and must establish Panzerdivisionen, which include all the support weapons required for a successful combat… However in 1929, Guderian had to fight against many reservations uttered by senior German military leaders, who deemed such units as Panzerdivisionen as a dream. The Reich was surviving despite a severe economic crisis as the rate of unemployment increased.”
The History of the Panzerwaffe, Volume 1: 1939-42 by Thomas Anderson will be published by Osprey on 17th December in the US and 20th December worldwide.
